This link will tell you more than you probably wanted to know:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_%28file_format%29
Let's suppose there's a blog that you like to read, but you don't
want to check it every five minutes to see whether there's
something new. If the blog supports RSS (or Atom, which performs
a similar function), then you can "subscribe" to its "RSS (or
Atom) feed" and then (if you have a suitable piece of software
installed as a plug-in to your web browser), you can be informed
whenever something new appears on the blog. This can be a big
timesaver in the case of blogs that don't get updated every day.
Why anyone would want an RSS feed from a mail list is a mystery to
me, though. If you wanted to know whenever someone added a piece
of mail, you could just subscribe to the mail list (or set the
mail list to digest mode, which can be very handy in the case of
lists that get a lot of traffic). So I don't understand the
advantage of getting an RSS notification instead of the mail
itself. Maybe Michael B. can explain this.
