Before the time of political boundaries people roamed the natural
landscape in ways that harmonized with the nature patterns of waterways,
forests, and wildlife migration. Today, we have artificially created
boundaries that relate more to wars and treaties than to the
characteristics of land topography and vegetation type.

A "bioregion" is a loose definition of an area whose environmental
characteristics are similar and interconnected. Bioregions are often
divided by watersheds or mountains but are ultimately decided by the
participants who organize efforts around preserving the health and
integrity of the area.

During this Lecture, Steve Gabriel of Finger Lakes Permaculture
Institute will provide an overview of the bioregional concept and also
showcase the variety of topics that will be presented throughout the
year. This is a new lecture series on the third Thursday of each month
that will highlight different elements of our Finger Lakes Bioregion in
order to paint a picture of the place we call home.
