Beautification Brigade Volunteer Training - March 2007

The Community Beautification Program is offering free training to be part
of the 2007 Beautification Brigade. The three-part training will be held
Thursdays, March 8, 15 and 22 from 6 - 8:00 pm at Cornell Cooperative
Extension, 615 Willow Avenue, Ithaca.
Have you noticed the beautiful flower plantings on the Ithaca Commons and
traffic medians throughout the city? Want to be part of the Beautification
Brigade, a fun and active group that plants and takes care of these flower
plantings? Volunteering with this group is a great way to make an immediate
difference in your community, learn some gardening skills, and meet new people.

The training sessions provide information on the types of plants that work
well in tough sites, landscape design for public spaces, body mechanics,
and slides of public beautification in other cities. (See detailed schedule
below.) Free dinner is served during the first half hour of each class,
with time to meet and socialize with the other volunteers.

Spring projects will begin in April and include starting seeds and and
planting cold-hardy pansies in planters on the Ithaca Commons. Late spring
and early summer will be devoted to planting annual and perennials flowers
in existing sites and also creating some new beautification sites, and in
the fall we plant mums and spring-flowering bulbs. Weekly volunteer
sessions will be offered evenings (6-8 pm) and mornings (10 am - noon)
throughout the spring, summer and fall. Tools, gloves and instruction are
provided at each session. We use no chemical pesticides or herbicides!

schedule, contact Chrys Gardener at 272-2292, extension 123, or send an
