JAN 24 – RENEWABLE ELECTRIC SYSTEMS AND THE CODE
Rebekah Carpenter of Finger Lakes Renewable Energy will present an overview
of photovoltaic and wind electric systems and discuss recent changes to
municipal zoning and building codes that affect solar and wind energy
installations.

JAN 31 – NATURAL AND NON-TOXIC FINISHES AND MATERIALS
As we spend over 90% of our lives indoors, the quality of the indoor
environment directly affects our health and well-being. Some of the primary
sources of indoor air pollution are furnishings, floor and wall coverings,
paints and other finishes. Brent and Diana Katzmann of Balance Studio will
share alternatives to conventional choices for interior walls, floors, and
furnishings that are not only less toxic, but often more sustainable and
attractive.

FEB 7 – WHAT’S OLD IS NEW AGAIN
Using local examples of creative re-use as a springboard, this seminar will
discuss how to incorporate reclaimed and recycled components into both
functional and decorative applications in the home. Local and regional
resources will be highlighted.

FEB 14 – LIVING PROOF: LOCAL EXAMPLES OF NATURAL, PASSIVE HOMES AND
TECHNOLOGIES
Case studies of several area homes will present floor plans, materials
choices, heating and energy systems, appliances, costs, and building
performance measures. A panel discussion with the homes' owners will
follow. Facilitated by ej George of the Ithaca Green Building Alliance and
members of the Ithaca College Community Sustainability Green Buildings Case
Study project.

FEB 21 – NO SEMINAR

FEB 28 – BUILDING WITH EARTH
The most common construction material in the world is also one of the most
versatile. Sarah Highland of Holistic Homebuilders and Aaron Dennis of
Tugley Timberframing will focus on earth plasters and floors, earthbag and
rammed earth tire walls, insulating "light" clay mixes, and a sculptable
dirt mixture called cob. Learn how these methods work and about the unique
properties of clay, which make it an especially healthful and
environmentally friendly building material.
