Hi All,
For those of you who came to the block party, thanks for coming and
supporting the event. What a beautiful, uplifting day! For those of you
who couldn't come because of distance or some other reason, I thought of
you and wished you could have been here. It was a lovely day and event
where hundreds of people gathered peacefully to eat local, organic ribs,
chicken, beans and rice, and local organic greens, listen to good music,
and talk about making our community a socially just and sustainable one.
I saw so many race liberation alliance members I haven't seen in months
and that made it extra wonderful. And two of our member have been doing
the roots anti-racism work in louisiana for the past many months and
they were there to talk about their experiences.
Our keynote speaker, Shakoor Aljuwani, was arrested the night before in
South Carolina while driving to Ithaca from New Orleans. He was in a car
that a church lent him, and when he was pulled over the cops didn't
believe the car was loaned to him so they jailed him for the night.
Because of that, he couldn't make it to Ithaca in time for the event and
instead just headed back to New Orleans.
This is what we're talking about. A black man gets pulled over, driving
a borrowed car, and gets jailed for the night. Apparently the cops were
surprised when a local branch of the church bailed him out. So instead
of our keynote speaker, Jhakeem said a few words about race liberation
alliance and jason of green guerrillas talked aobut their work teaching
youth how to make documentaries. And there was some really sweet improv
on the stage--Jhakeem with some youth (I'm sorry I missed who those guys
were) and of course our lovely emcee michelle berry.
My sister came and took dozens of great photos. I will sort through it
and create a photo gallery at the Ithaca Community News site. If anyone
else has photos, please send them along to post. My sister got some
great shots of the bands, Carolyn Peterson and me and the kids, but she
didn't get photos of all the rest of who so intimately involved in the
event. And to Leslie and Jason, my sis and her wife were especially
interested in Green Guerrillas and what you guys are doing.
Anyway, the following news story for a Syracuse TV station interviewed
Jhakeem and gave the event a little blurb:

The Ithaca Journal and Tompkins Weekly were also there covering the
event, so look for that on Monday, and of course Green Guerrillas were
filming, so we are especially excited to see that footage.
