for a host of environmental and quality of life issues, and has
advanced innovative policy approaches spanning an impressive range of
green fronts - from the hybridization of the citys taxi fleet to
the expansion of waterfront open space.
On Monday June 9th, Council Member Yassky will offer an
insiders account into green policy making and politics in the Big
Apple, and articulate his activist re-definition of the office of

Peak Oil NYC Monthly Meetup
LeAn Café, 583 Sixth Avenue, between 16th and 17th Streets, Manhattan
Assistant Organizer Bill Burke will present a geological
and economic update. With gasoline at $4/gallon, awareness of fuel
depletion is gradually moving into the mainstream. The more we can
expedite the process of learning and get the mainstream to acknowledge
the elephant in the room, the faster the massive shift to sustainable
ways of life can be put on track. In May, we co-sponsored screenings
of sustainability documentaries and a number of presentations on
permaculture and urban gardening. Let us know if you want to help
with finding venues for screenings or promoting events.

Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, by Lester R. Brown

Superbia! Most people currently live in the suburbs.
Superbia! is a book of fun and practical ideas for transforming
suburbs into vibrant, sustainable communities, using the authors 31
steps that include creating a neighborhood newsletter to foster a
sense of neighborhood identity and cooperation, regular community
dinners, discussion groups, and babysitting coops, the removal of
backyard fences to create park-like spaces for community play areas
and gardens, retrofitting homes for energy efficiency, and installing
community energy systems. A comprehensive resource listing puts all
the tools needed at your fingertips.
Plan B 3.0. In this greatly revised edition, Brown
outlines an ambitious plan that includes cutting carbon emissions 80
percent by 2020, achievable with existing technologies. We can stay
with business as usual and watch our economy decline and our
civilization unravel, or we can adopt Plan B and be the generation
that mobilizes to save civilization. Our generation will make the
decision, but it will affect life on earth for all generations to
come. The book is available for free online. You may also order
copies at: http://www.earth-policy.org/Books/PB3/index.htm
