Specifically, if you believe in big, free, community-wide parties in the
street...

If you think it's important for this (and all) communities to get together
to celebrate and have a good time, I'd like to invite you to the 2nd
Annual Summertime Block Party.

On Saturday July 5th, from 2:00-8:00pm, there will be a free party outside
GIAC, at the corner of Court and Albany Streets. This year we'll be 
celebrating after all the hard work that's been put forth in the last year
in pursuit of equity in our schools.

Thousands of One, Mbusi, Kevin Kinsella's Food, Clothes & Shelter, Taina
Asili y La Banda Rebelde, and Hip Hop Congress Showcase will provide the
music. Local youth poets and Michelle Berry (this year's emcee) will bring
poetry. Tuff Soul will host a recycled, refashioned & vintage fashion
show.

There will be an organic BBQ with ribs & chicken and vegetarian dishes,
featuring local foods prepared by local churches. Businesses owned by your
neighbors will be showcasing products in line
with our mission of social progress & sustainability, and local
organizations will be tabling.

Local businesses like Eastern Mountain Sports, No Radio Records, Home
Green Home and many more have provided us with hundreds of dollars in gift
certificates to raffle off.. as well as two four-day passes to GrassRoots!

This is a multi-generational event for the whole community. This year
we're happy to provide a Kids' Corner with facepainting and activities, so
bring the whole family.

We're all working hard to make this the best event of the summer. We hope
to see you there for some dancing & delicious food!

If you want to help make this event even better, please consider
volunteering. Pitching in for 2 hours of the day would be a great help. We
need people to paint faces, staff the hospitality tent, help serve up the
local food, etc. This event is only possible because we're collectively
pooling our efforts. If you want to be part of this years SBP 2008 crew,
please drop me a line. I'd love to work & celebrate with you.
