TCLocal is a group of citizens developing strategies for dealing with
energy descent in Tompkins County. To that end, we're publishing one
article per month on a specific subject, examining that topic in the
light of higher energy prices. You can find them at:

http://www.tclocal.org/

Our previous article looked at producing fruits in Tompkins County after
the peak, perhaps a more classically permaculture subject. Our newest
article, on roads, examines a very different kind of topic. Roads are
historically a government endeavor, though one that has looked very
different over the past few centuries.

This article focuses on how to maintain an appropriate road network in
the face of changing user needs and greatly increased costs. Some
transit options and approaches like car-sharing are considered in the
course of discussion, but the main focus here is the physical
infrastructure and its support. (Transit deserves separate attention.)

Upcoming articles will cover water treatment, urban land use, household
preparation, and health. We're planning to publish around one article
per month.

The new TCLocal site is specifically designed to get your feedback on
these ideas they are developed. These articles are a starting point
for a conversation we hope will include a wide variety of readers coming
at these issues from different perspectives. We welcome comments, and
hope to find more good ideas through public discussion.

Thanks,
Simon St.Laurent
Chair, TCLocal
