I second Joe's note of caution.
I've been involved with public health for many years and have seen the
increased number of people, especially kids, with preventable infectious
diseases due to a lack of immunization. Some of you may be aware that we
in Tompkins County recently had a serious outbreak of pertussis, which
even infected unimmunized adults. Many area adults were sick for months
with the infections.
Garrett's book constitutes a significant contribution to our
understanding of healthcare history and should be read by anyone
interested in what has happened to the former safety net of public
health in this country.
