*BALITMORE INTERNATIONAL RHYTHM FESTIVAL* -- this weekend!!

We come together as a community, to share our dreams for peace,
harmony, equality and justice. In this endeavor, we gather to
express ourselves through our combined voices and our drums. This is
no easy matter. For whenever people gather for a common purpose
there is till much that must be done so that all may truly
    experience synchronicity.

The Baltimore International Rhythm Festival is an expression of the
universal desire for community gathering and the focusing of common
intentions. Through our concerts, workshops and festival
marketplace, we are once again stating to the whole world that our
needs matter and that our voices will be heard. However, it is more
than just creating opportunities for people to learn a new drumming
tradition or to see the hot new acts from around the area. It is
also about discovering and sharing a vision for the future.

My vision in taking on the task of orchestrating this year's BIRDS
Festival has been about opening myself up to the possibilities that
come from a new home, new friends and acquaintances, a new job and
new beginnings. The energy that is growing, as we get closer to the
Festival, is electric. The effort of those who have committed
themselves to bringing about a dynamic and balanced mix of musicians
    and dancers has been stellar.

All that remains is to continue to put the word out to those who
have not yet been made aware that Friday and Saturday, September 28
& 29, BIRDS will be presenting the 12^th installment of the
Baltimore International Rhythm Festival at St. John's of Baltimore
    City, St. Paul & 27 ^th Streets.

This year's festivities include evening concerts on both Friday and
Saturday, featuring on Friday electronic and acoustic blending of
The Rhythm Shamans, the Sufi devotional rhythms of the SAMA
Ensemble, and the shamanic hip-hop of Freek Factory. While
Saturday's bill includes, Djembefola (master drummer) Mahiri
Fadjimba Keita and friends, and progressive Middle-Eastern / Arabic
percussionist Raquy and the Cavemen (considered by many as the
Hottest Belly Dance Music in the US).

*As for educational programming, this year's festival is
hosting two dance and five percussion workshops, featuring:
Lisa Zahiya (Middle Eastern Rhythm for Dancers), Jaquy
MacMillan (Drum for Joy), SERA (East Coast Tribal Belly
Dance), Raquy Danzinger (Doumbek Basics), Mahiri-Fadjimba
Keita (Djembe Dounoun Ensemble), David Kuckhermann (Frame Drum
& Riq), and Brad Sidwell (Bulgarian Drumming-an Introduction
to Balkan Music). In addition, my good friend, Jim Gagnon will
be available to offer didgeridoo lesson to all who are eager
          to learn. *

*The outdoor stage will serve as the central performance focal
point for the street festival portion of the event. Hosted by
Master of Ceremonies, Stu Needel, this stage will feature acts
as diverse and as talented as to be found at any festival in
Baltimore. These include: Bongo Buddahs (Ken Crampton and
Friends), Belladonna & Mab (Belly Dance and Side Show), Lime
Kiln Middle School Percussion Ensemble (lead by Nellie Hill),
PURE (Public Urban Ritual Experiment), Hee Kyung Lee (All
Women's Traditional Korean Dancers and Drummers), & John West
(Freeform fusion of Lakota, Andean, Afro-Latin and Psychedelic
          traditions). *

*Finally, the BIRDS Festival Marketplace will include drums
and other musical instrument merchants, clothing & jewelry
designers, imported folk art, and community and neighborhood
organizations, along with Red Emma's providing coffees, teas,
          and food. *

*Together, these concert performances, workshops and
marketplace vendors create the environs and happenings for one
of the most adventuresome Rhythm Festivals that Baltimore has
ever experienced. I invite you to discover and explore the
amazing community that will gather at St John's of Baltimore
City, next Friday and Saturday, September 28 & 29, for the 12
^th Baltimore International Rhythm Festival. *
