Notes from MGJ General Meeting
Aug. 14th

Reportbacks

Media:  Just finished two Calls to Action.  The
shorter one will be posted on the website.  Both of
these documents were approved.

Education:  In the process of figuring out what the
People’s Summit is going to look like.  Ideas include
a community development forum, civic participation
skills building, and workshops that connect local and
global issues.  

Scenario:  The big rally is going to be on Saturday
the 28th with the theme of quarantining the World Bank
and IMF.  Permits have been submitted – no negative
responses yet.  There is also an idea of an action
earlier in the week featuring a Trojan Horse.

Outreach:  Plans are in the works to hold a Community
Roundtable and an NGO Roundtable soon to get support
for September’s activities.  There may also be a
Spanish outreach event in Mt. Pleasant and a Labor
Forum during the last week in September.

Arts in Action:  Props construction will begin soon.

Discussion:  Outreach Strategy

Nadine pointed out that when we contact different
groups, organizations etc., we need to be asking them
to a) help organize the action; b) endorse and donate
money; c) turn people out for the action.

There was a go-around where everyone identified
organizations, groups, schools, networks etc. that
they would contact and work on.  Martin took
everyone’s pledges and phone numbers down and promised
to call and follow up.  There was also a request that
people contact their friends who have not been active
with MGJ in a while and encourage them to re-connect.

There was a discussion of what kind of materials we
need such as postcards, stickers and an organizing
packet.  Folks pointed out that there is a lot of
material already made (much of it from last year) that
needs to be located and updated a bit.  

Breakouts

Media:  Will start working through the very large
media list and will plan a media training fairly soon.
 Next meeting: Tues, 8/20, 1025 Vermont Ave. NW 3rd
Floor, 7:30 PM

Education: Next meeting: Thurs., 8/15, 1730
Connecticut Ave. NW, 7 PM

Outreach: Thurs. Outreach will set up a voicemail box
but needs some $ to cover the costs.  Next meeting:
8/15, AFSC Office, 2211 14th St. NW, 7:30 PM.  Also,
Wheatpasting next Wed. Aug. 21st 9 PM.  Meet at 1640
Hobart Street NW

Fundraising:  Will meeting after the general meeting. 
Working groups need to submit budget to Fundraising
soon.

Scenario: Next meeting: Tues., 8/20, AFSC Office, 7:30
PM

Next General Meeting: Wed. 8/28, St. Stephens, 7:30 PM
