The success of economic globalization requires "unlimited growth"-a
never-ending increase in the transformation of "resources" into
capital. This has pushed the Earth's life support systems to the
brink of collapse, showing that an economic system based on the
accumulation of wealth and unlimited growth is simply not sustainable.
The result of this unsustainable economic model is skyrocketing
violence in those regions of the world where coveted resources are
concentrated. As these resources continue to diminish, conflicts
over these dwindling reserves will escalate. Where military violence
is not used, economic coercion is used in the form of the World
Bank's Structural Adjustment Programs, the World Trade Organization
and trade agreements like the North American Free Trade Agreement.
All of these provide legal frameworks to empower corporations and
disenfranchise local communities- overturning human rights,
environmental and workers' rights laws.
Economic globalization, war, environmental devastation and human
rights abuses are inextricably linked. The social movements that
address these issues must also link together to create a powerful
movement for change that can begin to address the economic and social
crises that form the roots of all of our issues.
Come and discuss the implications of this unsustainable economic
model and what we can do about it.
