!!!FORWARD WIDELY!!!

Caution a Better World is Under Construction!
Protest the Spring Meetings of the World Bank and IMF
April 15-17, 2005 Washington DC
www.globalizethis.org – mgj at riseup.net

Show that we demand, and are already building, a better world! The April 16,
2005 meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank will
represent the five-year anniversary of the first major demonstrations against
these institutions in the United States. Again we will gather in the streets of
D.C. on A16 to show that our resistance to these institutions and their greed
only grows stronger. A16 will once more be the day we show that our dreams for
a better world are not only possible, but under construction at this moment, in
all corners of the globe- and the IMF and World Bank, with all their efforts to
demolish these dreams and actions, can never stop us.

Last week’s nomination of Paul Wolfowitz as the President of the World Bank
highlights the connections between the aggressive military policy of the Bush
administration and the economic policies and World Bank. After bombing Iraq
and occupying it with soldiers, Wolfowitz is now entrusted with the task of
dropping economic bombs on the rest of the Global South, and occupying their
government’s with economic “advisers”.

If you’ve ever protested the Administration’s Iraq war policy – or the World
Bank and IMF – you need to be in Washington on April 16th. Show that we
understand the next step in the process of brutalizing and dominating the
Global South (and beyond). The World Bank and IMF’s economic policy is war by
a different means!!

ANNOUNCEMENT::

1. WE NEED YOU!!! Come out and plug in!!!

The April 15-17 mobilization against the World Bank and IMF belongs to everyone.
There is no specialization that limits access to organizing. MGJ wants, needs,
and welcomes any and all to come and join in the organizing effort. In this
final stretch before the mobilization many hands are needed to make the events
of April 15-17 as meaningful and awesome as possible. Come and get plugged in.
The vision of a better world, a world without the World Bank and IMF, belongs
to all of us.

:: April 17 Community Action Day ::

This is perhaps the most meaningful day of the mobilization. A day we put our
theory into practice and go out into the DC community to learn about
community-based organizing while visiting with low-income senior citizens in
DC!!! Out of towners are encouraged to take part for sure! Sign up by e-mailing
Mark Anderson at wearefamily at aol.com or calling 202-487-8698 (If you sign up
make sure you can come. The number of visits set up will be determined by how
many people sign up)

Join the Mobilization for Global Justice
and
We Are Family
to Build Bridges between Generations and Beyond!!!

Visit Seniors in the Shaw and North Capitol Communities 2-5pm, Sunday,
April 17, 2005.

Please join MGJ and We Are Family in giving the gift of your presence to
low-income, inner-city seniors! WAF coordinator, Mark Andersen, will be sending
out volunteers to visit seniors in their own homes from 2pm to 5pm, Sunday,
April 17th.

Interested volunteers are invited to gather at 2pm in the community room of the
James Senior Apartments, 1425 N Street NW, near the McPherson Square metro.
Breakfast foods like bagels, juice, and fruit will be provided.

After a brief orientation, teams of volunteers will be sent to visit seniors in
the building or in nearby neighborhoods. After two or three visits, the teams
will reconvene in the James community room between 4 and 5pm to share their
experiences, and pass on any concerns for WAF follow-up. (In addition, those
who wish to may also help to bring seniors to a spring celebration at George
Washington University called "Senior Prom" after the visits are done.)

Such visits may seem like a small thing, but they are truly significant.
Simply by showing up, you will be sending a precious message to these seniors:
that they matter, that people do care, and that, in the deepest sense, we all
are family.

Moreover, by reaching out across boundaries like age, race, class, culture, and
beyond, we can begin to create the relationships necessary to truly build a
majority movement for global justice, beginning in our own local community.
These seniors are survivors, often carrying a wisdom learned through years of
poverty and struggle, including legal segregation. They built their
communities. While they often have needs, they also have lessons to teach and
gifts to share.

We Are Family does this work on an on-going basis. Even if you can't come out
on April 17th, please be in touch, there are lots of ways to help out. Together
we can build just, caring, and inclusive communities!

****PLEASE NOTE****
Since the number of visits set up will be based on how many volunteers are
expected to come, PLEASE let us know in advance if you are planning to attend!!
For more information, or to RSVP, please contact Mark at wearefamilydc at aol.com
or 202-487-8698.

**If you would like to participate in the Community Project on A17 and have
special needs please contact mgj at riseup.net. We are committed to making all of
our events and activities open, accessible, and accepting of all. Any input,
comments, or questions you have are welcome and encouraged.

:: Housing ::

What We Need:: Places for traveling activists to lay their weary heads

Housing needs your help! It looks like there won't be any mass housing on
Saturday the 16th. There is still a manageable amount of people in need of
housing, as long as we get a few more homes. It is really important that we
get people placed by the beginning of the next week, or else they won't come to
town. Volunteer your place if you can OR

Please talk to your friends and get them to sign up -- if they don't want to
post online, have them email Jon (scolnik at gmail.com ) or Lia ( lgilles at gwu.edu
) and we'll match them up.

All we need to know is:: how many people you can accommodate, where you’re
located, and what special considerations you have (such as pets, smokers,
non-smokers, parking/metro, etc.).

What We Have::

Mass housing is available from 5:30 pm the night of Friday, A15 to 8 am the
morning of Saturday A16, at St. Stephen’s Church, 1525 Newton St. NW (16th &
Newton NW) (see below for parking and directions). St. Stephen’s can
accommodate several hundred folks - if you plan on using it, please let us know
how big your group is:: e-mail a16dc at mutualaid.org.
DIRECTIONS to ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH:
DRIVING: http://www.saintstephensdc.org/directions.html
PARKING: Street Only! The parking lot is for the residents of the neighboring
buildings. You can also park at most suburban metro stations, many of which
are just off the beltway. See::
http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/daily-parking.cfm for more info and
http://www.wmata.com/metrorail/systemmap.cfm for a map designating stations
with parking lots.
METRO: From the Columbia Heights (Green Line) station walk north on 14th St,
turn left on Newton St, and walk until you reach 16th. Entrance in back.

For those of you traveling in small groups please use the housing boards at
www.a16dc.org/boards . There are hostels in the area as well (some of them are
really great too!). A list of hostels in the DC area is up under the “Coming to
DC?” link at www.globalizethis.org -- check it out if you feel like this is the
option that best suits your needs.

Everyone who wants to come to town should be able to so
if you are coming to DC
and have some extra room in your car/van/plane/train please, please, please
sign up to share on the rideboard at www.a16dc.org/boards. If you need a ride
the rideboards are a great place to look!!

A16 to help activists and track arrests. Legal observers will also be out on
the streets to monitor police activity. MGJ is committed to supporting
everyone that gets arrested during actions on A15 and A16 up to, and at, their
release. If you have any questions regarding what, exactly, this means you can
e-mail mgj at riseup.net or you can come to a legal training, which are discussed
at length below.

We want everyone to be prepared for being on the streets. Legal training is an
important component of preparing to take our struggles to the street. The
Mobilization for Global Justice and the Justice and Solidarity Collective are
providing trainings so that everyone, each individual or an appointed legal
person from your affinity group, can be prepared to take care of themselves and
their loved ones while out on April 16th. There will be three separate training
sessions, each offering a know your rights component, a street legal component,
and a jail and court solidarity component. MGJ encourages anyone and everyone
to come to one of these trainings.

For additional information on your rights and what you can expect if you/your
friends get arrested please feel free to e-mail mgj at riseup.net. Also,
www.justiceandsolidarity.org has updated informational materials posted. The

:: For the Medics out there ::
If you are planning on coming to the mobilization and are interested in
providing medic support please, please, please let us know! We want everyone
to be safe and medics are a huge part of making that possible. We would love
to get in touch with you – and answer any questions you might have – before
April 16th. Please e-mail mgj at riseup.net with “medic” in the subject heading
and give us a good way to contact you (e-mail and a phone number would be
great!). We appreciate your help more than you can guess!!

:: A16 Set-up and Clean-up ::

As you all may know the mobilization on April 16th is going to be (and already
is) a lot of work – one great way to plug in is helping with the clean up of
the parks where our march will begin and end. The march is beginning @ Murrow
Park (18th& H Sts. NW – see the March Route section for details), step-off @
1:00 pm. We want to leave the park as clean as when we got there – if you, or
anyone you know, would be willing to take a few minutes at the end of the
Murrow rally to help MGJ clean up the park we would greatly appreciate it!
It’ll only take a few, especially if we get lots o’ folks, and we can all run
to catch up with the march together! If you would rather help clean-up Dupont
Park after our rally there (clean-up will begin around 4pm) that’s appreciated
too! If you want to volunteer please e-mail hope at 50years.org with your name,
e-mail, and phone number as well as where you’d like to help out! Thanks
everybody – You’re grrrreat!!

2. Direct Action::

MGJ supports autonomous direct action and knows its value in the struggle for
social and economic justice. MGJ is here to help you realize your vision for
A15-A17! Let us know what you need and, if you can, a general idea of what you
are planning so that our legal and medic folks can be prepared to help you!
Contact mgj at riseup.net.

In case you don’t see what you need here, please let us know how we can help!
MGJ is here to make sure you have access to the resources you need – we are
happy to help put your affinity group or organization in touch with legal and
medic support. We are also happy to assist your group in acquiring resources
such as maps, calendars of official events (WB and IMF events) and supplies.
MGJ will also put your group in touch with local radicals working on media if
you want media to be aware of your action. E-mail mgj at riseup.net with any
questions.

3. Scenario::

As many of you may already know our theme for this year’s demonstrations is::
A BETTER WORLD IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION!!
Our scenario has been shaping up nicely, so here’s a little re-cap

April 15th: Gather at the Treasury at Pennsylvania Ave. and 15th St. NW @ 12
noon where the G-7 Finance Ministers will be meeting.

Come wearing hard hats, with tools, banner, lots of energy, and ready to call
for a people’s inspection of the G-7, the foundation upon which the Bank and
Fund stand. Is it structurally sound?? We have our debts OOPS, I mean doubts!

April 15th: After inspecting the World Bank and IMF come see what’s in the
works in the world we’re constructing – and let us know what you’ve been
doing!! Come to a teach-in on LOCAL TO LOCAL CONNECTIONS: LINKING COMMUNITY
ISSUES GLOBALLY. Join activists working on community issues in Washington DC
as well as activists from the Global South for a night of sharing struggles,
ideas, and solidarity! St. Stephen's Church, 16th and Newton NW.

April 16th: Turn your back on the Bank and Fund and Build a Better World!!!

Converge at the World Bank and IMF, 18th and H Sts. NW at Noon (H and I Sts.
Will be open to foot traffic – we recommend taking I Street to 18th Street and
following 18th south 1 block to Murrow Park). The people have inspected the
G-7, the foundation of the Bank and Fund and now will declare them structurally
UNsound. Their greed and destruction will not do. They cannot stand on such
shaky ground for long – come and help bring them down (symbolically of course)!
Come wearing and bearing the symbols of construction and re-building; build
props, paint banners makes signs. MGJ will demolish the symbols of empire and
raise up representations of the world we ARE constructing!

March to Dupont Circle:: The Route!!

Step-off time is 1:00pm from Murrow Park, 18th and H Sts. NW. From 18th & H
Sts. We will follow 18th Street north across Connecticut to Massachusetts
Avenue. At Massachusetts we will take a Left and travel northwest into Dupont
Circle. We will follow Massachusetts around Dupont Circle and then enter
Dupont Park at the point in the roundabout where Connecticut Avenue enters the
Circle. Once in Dupont construction zones relating to peace and true security,
health care/housing/education, a clean environment, and direct democracy will be
set up for exploration, interaction, and inspiration. Here participants can
help in the construction of what represents these themes. Music, food, and
play will follow. It’s gonna be super AWESOME!!!

Accessibility (of Murrow, Dupont, and the March itself!)::

The Mobilization for Global Justice wants to make sure that anyone and everyone
who wants to be out on the streets during the 2005 IMF and World Bank Spring
meetings can be. To facilitate your participation in the march and rally on
April 16th here is what you can expect from the march route itself::

Murrow Park::

Murrow Park is a rather small triangle with sidewalks around the perimeter.
Much of downtown DC, including the area around 18th and H Sts. will be blocked
to car traffic during the meetings of the Bank and Fund, making vehicular
access to the park severely limited. There are two rather close metro
stations, Farragut North and West. Farragut West (orange and blue lines) is
the closest, about 2 blocks from the park, while Farragut North (red line) is
about 3-4 blocks away. The Farragut North station has elevator and escalator
access at the K Street exit, while the other exits have escalator access. The
Farragut West station has elevator and escalator access at the 18th St. exit
with escalator access at all other exits. The metro stations will be open on
Saturday, April 16. For more information on the metro and metrobus you can
visit www.wmata.com.

The March::

>From Murrow Park we will embark on our march! We are going to follow 18th St.
north towards Dupont Circle. 18th St. is a rather wide, well-paved road with a
slight uphill gradient to be followed by a downhill portion in the march. As we
cross Connecticut Avenue we will begin up another slight hill. We will follow
18th St. until we reach Massachusetts Avenue, where we will turn left. We will
then follow Massachusetts Avenue onto Dupont Circle – we will follow Mass Ave
all the way around the Circle (marching around the Park), and then will enter
Dupont Park where Connecticut Avenue enters Dupont Circle.

Dupont Circle & Park::

The Dupont Circle rally should begin around 2pm and go until about 4pm.
Sidewalks provide access to almost all parts of Dupont Park. If you are not
planning on joining the march, but would like to join the rally the Dupont
Circle metro station (red line) has escalator access to Dupont Circle at the
South/Dupont Circle exit, while the Q St. exit has both elevator and escalator
access, but is a bit farther from Dupont Park. For more information on the
metro and metrobus you can visit www.wmata.com.
If you have questions regarding accessibility of Murrow Park, Dupont
Circle/Park, or the march route please e-mail mgj at riseup.net. The Mobilization
for Global Justice is committed to creating spaces that are open, accessible,
and acception of all. We welcome everyone to participate in making this
happen. If you have any special needs, please let us know.

April 17th:: Community Project with We are Family!

Join with DC community organizers in a day of community service to show that a
better world is under construction right here in DC!! From 2-5 pm on Sunday,
April 17th the Mobilization for Global Justice (MGJ) will be working with local
DC community group We Are Family. We Are Family works with low-income seniors in
the Shaw and North Capitol neighborhoods of DC. MGJ will be assisting We Are
Family with visiting seniors, helping them with grocery shopping, and doing any
cleaning that needs to be done around their homes. Come out, volunteer, and
