I. LAST MEETING
Decision to send a letter to UFPJ announcing our intent to be a part
of the September meetings
Street Revelry on May26th
II. UPDATES
1. Farewell Reception for Wofowitz will be held on May 26th and
yes, we do have the details. It is from 4:30-6:30 in room 385 of the
Russel Senate Office Building….now that we have this information, what
do we want to do???
Proposal to meet on Wednesday around 6:00pm before the UFPJ meeting.
2. June 1st
8:30-9:30 am –leaflet
9:30-10:30 am-picket
We are thinking of making this idea similar to the street theater
action on front of the treasury department. We need to find a time for
anybody who is interested in coming up with a script. Basav and maybe
Tia have expressed interest. Julia will email a proposal this weekend.
One Idea. Let’s have the tube heads hammer nails into coffins with
messages written on them.
3. Stop CAFTA
MGJ has now officially joined the Stop CAFTA Coalition. This is very
important as we are 5 votes short of a final NO on CAFTA. It seems
Bush’s plan to parade the leaders of Central America has backfired.
They have met with opposition and we will continue to keep up the
pressure!
Ideas:
Mock birthday for CAFTA
Stop CAFTA cookies. Bake Sale. Stop CAFTA cool-aid.
Morrigan will send out an email on this.
III. REPORT BACKS
1. Local/Global
There are two things in the works.
a. Tax the Bank
b. Movie Showing: Thirst
Tax the Bank: There is an outline of a strategy. The first step is to
build a coalition around a statement. Once there is a statement, go
forward public ally.
Basav will send statement and petition to the list serve.
Thirst: Is late June a good time?
2. Bio-Dem Teach In
June 2nd 6:30-8:30 All Souls Church (MGJ is co-sponsoring the event)
All Souls is located at 1500 Harvard St., NW. The main entrance to the
sanctuary is at the corner of 16th and Harvard Streets.
3. September Meetings of the IMF/World Bank
Proposals:
MGJ gets permit for Murrow, Franklin, and Dupont (CONSENSED)
Letter Proposal: Basav has drafted a wonderful letter to UFPJ. There
was a move to add the line, “Knowledge of organizing in D.C.” to the
second to last paragraph.
(CONSENSED)
4. Strategy Retreat
We have the dates! June 25th and 26th. Location T.B.A. (if anybody has
any good ideas bring them to the next meeting)
IV. FALL MEETINGS
2 items were discussed in conjunction with the fall meetings. First we
decided not to go ahead with the in-depth conversation about the
goals/tactics/objectives of MGJ during the fall meetings until more
people were present. So instead we talked about what groups we would
like to bring in to be a part of this process.
We came up with
-Gorilla Poets
-Student Global Aids
-A16DC
-DCJammers
The second thing we discussed was what DAWN has been planning since we
had a DAWN rep at the meeting. He told us that:
DAWN has agreed to work with UFPJ and would like to involve even more
groups in the process. For this major mobilization they would like to
use the protest in part to inspire education and movement building. So
they are thinking about having a rally with an open mic and discussion
groups. They have a few things in the works that they will let us know
about such as a Leaders Summit and a Conference.
V. Proposals
1. Letter to UPFJ (consensed)
2. Permits for September (consensed)
and….
3. Scrapbook
outreach tool
we can do scrapbook parties
note that it is different from a manual
Jasmine will send out an email.
Next Meeting: Next Wednesday 7:00pm. And then Soren’s going away
party.
For Next time: Please think about the goals/tactics/objectives MGJ
actions during the September meetings of the IMF/World Bank.
Next Weeks Facilitators: Tia and Jasmine
