On October 19-21, as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank meet in Washington DC, they will again be the target of major protests against their destructive policies. Global social movements under the umbrella of Jubilee South have called for worldwide actions against these institutions over the entire week of October 14-21, and activists in Washington DC and elsewhere in the Untied States have responded to this worldwide call by planning actions in Washington DC for the weekend of October 19-21.
An informal coalition that includes immigrant community groups, labor organizations, international solidarity organizations, anarchist collectives, environmental organizations, anti-war groups, student groups, and other community groups have come together under the name of “October Coalition” to plan these protests. The target of the protest is not only the IMF and World Bank, but the entire system of global capitalism, and how it exploits people locally in Washington, DC and worldwide. The organizers are connecting the IMF and World Bank to poverty, disenfranchisement, and gentrification in Washington DC; to the exploitation of immigrants; to war and militarism; and to environmental devastation and climate change.
A variety of events have been planned, incorporating protest, direct action, creativity, and popular education. The major events are as follows:
