Stop reading e-mails during your lunch hour and get some sun and
exercise! What better way to spend your weekday lunch than outside and
moving your feet and voice. And what better way to spend your weekday
lunch than with MGJ brethren. And what better way to spend your weekday
lunch in solidarity with picketing brothers and sisters.
Think the Post can improve its coverage? Do you just want to yell at
the Post for whatever reason? Well first lets make the Post Company
improve its contract with its workers. The Newspaper Guild Local 35 has
been in negotiations for months with the Washington Post. Not only are
wages and benefits sticking points, but the Post insists on e-mail
surveillance and cracking down on the union communicating with its
members at work. Let's show support for the writers, editors, and staff
that make the Post each day. Show up at the Washington Post (15th and L
Sts NW) Wednesday, July 31st at 12:30pm with your mgj and labor
paraphernalia.
Tired of McDonald's serving up fast food and poverty wages? The Hotel
Employees and Restaurant Employees (HERE) Local 25 is protesting the
replacement of union workers with low-wage anti-union McDonalds at the
National Air and Space Museum. They are running informational pickets
everyday of the week at the Air and Space Museum from 11am to 1pm. Its
a really busy corridor full of tourists. The Local has said that it
would appreciate MGJ helping out with the pickets. Come help out
Friday, August 2nd between 11am to 1pm down at the mall by the museum.
If you're interested in either of these events, please e-mail me at
jhipolito at ufcw.org so I can tell the locals about how many people to
expect. However if you fly by the seat of your pants and like the
element of surprise-- then simply show up!
