MEDHA PATKAR, World-Renowned Human Rights and Environmental Activist
Kay Spiritual Center, AU Main Campus

Presented by IDPSA, the Kay Spiritual Center, and the Assoication for
India's Development.  Medha Patkar: Leader of the Save the Narmada
Movement in India; Commissioner, World Commission on Dams; Winner of the
Right Livelihood Award; Goldman Environmental Prize; BBC's Green Ribbon
Award; Amnesty International's Human Rights Defender Award.  Medha
Patkar will speak about the struggles of natural resource based
communities facing onslaught on their livelihoods, cultures and basic
rights, in the context of destructive 'development', globalization and
erosion of institutions of social justice. She will highlight the
current situation faced by the ongoing movement against unjust
displacement and irrational economics of large dams in the Narmada
valley, and the role to be played by the world community in promoting an
alternative paradigm of development that is more just and
