WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The campaign to elect Arturo

22.

Latin Jazz Alley is located at 1721 Columbia

Arturo Griffiths is running for the at-large seat
on D.C. Council in the 2004 election on the D.C.

unsuccessfully for an at-large Council seat in
2000. He plans a formal announcement of his 2004
candidacy shortly.

Mr. Griffiths, a veteran community activist and
labor organizer, was born in Panama and
immigrated to Washington, D.C. in 1964. He has
been a longtime activist in youth organizations,
and helped found the Latin American Youth Center.
He was elected President of the Latin American
Festival for three years. Mr. Griffiths planned
and coordinated the Citywide Multicultural
Leadership Summit in 1992. He also worked to
build a citywide grassroots health care advocacy
organization called Health Care Now and fought to
preserve the public hospital at DC General.

More recently, Mr. Griffiths has been working as
a union organizer for the Service Employees
International Union (SEIU). He is also
organizing with the Coalition for Housing
Justice, to stop evictions in Columbia Heights
