PRESS STATEMENT
18 December 2005
WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION 6TH MINISTERIAL CONFERENCE (WTO MC6)
JUBILEE SOUTH CONDEMNS HONGKONG POLICE
FOR UNLEASHING A REIGN OF TERROR
HONG KONGTHE SUPPRESSED VIOLENCE of the Hong Kong police broke through
the thinly-veiled façade of politeness and responsible behavior
through a series of brutal actions beginning evening of December 17 and
continuing till early morning of December 18. Over 600 protesters of the
ongoing World Trade Organization negotiations were arrested around 3 am on
Sunday morning, stripped and beaten up in police lock-ups, and taken to
the magistacy in Kung Tong (East Kowloon).
It is obvious that the protesters were provoked by the use of excessive
and brutal force by the police, who are now indiscriminately picking up
protesters, even the injured, and jailing them. The Hong Kong police is
blatantly guilty of violating the human rights of the protesters by their
unacceptable use of excessive force and detention of persons exercising
their right of democratic protest.
The singling out of Korean demonstrators, in particular, for inhuman
punishment by the police is also an indication of racism.
Jubilee South, a tri-continental international movement, declares that
protesters of all nationalities, races and colors are united in their
fight against the monster called the WTO, and the attempts of the police
to create divisions by singling out protesters from a particular country
are churlish and reprehensible.
Jubilee South severely condemns the police action, demands the immediate
release of detained protesters, cessesion of police brutalities, and
extends support and solidarity to the victims, particularly our Korean
colleagues. ###
