[mgj-discuss] July 9th global justice teach-in for tonight's meeting agenda

Hey all,

This is an email to ask y'all to please discuss the July 9th teach-in /
spokescouncil / benefit concert (kicking off the Gr8 Days of Resistance
against the G8) at MGJ meeting tonight! In addition to what I wrote further
below to Amina (who will help outreach) here's the most important info:

Ryme says that our cost to use the space from 12 to 6 pm should be $400.
Ideally we'll get co-sponsoring organizations to cover some or all of this
-- and could MGJ help nail down co-sponsors?

My proposal is to have 3 workshops on climate justice; mountain justice; and
fusing anti-war / global justice. I think the latter could be an interesting
discussion that leads into joint strategy & tactics for direct action -- and
could MGJ help facilitate it? Also there would be three concurrent trainings
for affinity groups & individuals forming AGs ( i.e. legal, direct action
tactics, medical) that MGJ could also help with...

Also there's the spokescouncil which would need solid facilitation, and if
anyone has ideas about or would want to help put together the benefit
concert, that would be awesome...

Otherwise, I just wanna say that I hope MGJ consenses to strongly support
this event in all ways possible & especially outreach for it :-)

Finally, there's definitely lots of other stuff regarding the G8 events that
we all should be discussing. If anyone who's attending the meeting tonight
is free to brainstorm quickly this afternoon via phone and can tell me your
# that would be sweet... ;-)

Hi Amina,

Here's the basic info.

- Ethan Genauer. Education is an integral part of my activism; I recently
coordinated a conference in DC, and worked as an English writing tutor
throughout my undergraduate studies.
- A daylong teach-in connecting energy, climate and global justice issues
with international protests against the 2008 G8 Summit happening July 15-17
in St. Petersburg, Russia. Three issue-based workshops (on climate justice,
mountain justice, and anti war / global justice) from 12 to 6 pm plus three
concurrent trainings ( i.e. legal, medical, & direct action tactics /
strategy) for individuals and affinity groups. Followed by spokescouncil
meeting and benefit concert.
- Over 100 people of all ages (but lots of youth!)
- DVD film player & projection / possibly powerpoint capability. Food. Sound
system for benefit concert.
- This event will be publicized heavily to environmental & global justice /
anti war activists. We'll have co-sponsoring organizations, but DC Anti-War
Network and Mobilization for Global Justice will bottom-line the outreach.

I'm trying to think of a good name for the event -- I'll sleep on it & let
you know tomorrow! Thanks for helping, and looking forward to telling you
more about the mountain justice struggle!
