[mgj-discuss] for MGJ agenda: Climate, Energy & Global Justice teach-in July 9th

Here's some basic draft text for the July 9th teach-in! I've started sending
it out to some
potential sponsors but I won't start circulating the public announcement
until next week. As part of the MGJ meeting tonight, please discuss this and
decide whether or not MGJ will put energy into organizing this...

===========

*** Reclaim our Fate! Climate, Energy and Global Justice ***
* Teach-In at the People's Media Center in Washington DC *
Sunday July 9th, 12 to 6 pm

12 to 1:45 - Climate Science 101 and Strategies for Climate Justice Action
2 to 3:45 - Energy Alternatives and the Mountain Justice Struggle to Save
                  Appalachia's Mountains from Mountaintop Removal
Coal-Mining
4 to 5:45 - Against War, For Global Justice: Linking Our Movements!

(Plus concurrent workshops for affinity groups and individuals forming
affinity
groups -- i.e. legal, medical, and tactical trainings for direct action)

Followed by action spokescouncil meeting (6:30 - 8:00) and benefit concert

Organized by DC Anti-War Network,
Mobilization for Global Justice &
Rising Tide North America

WE NEED TEACH-IN SPONSORS! A few sponsors at $150-200 each would
enable us to cover the venue rental cost of the teach-in from 12 to 6 pm...

Subject: list intro / July 9th Teach-In to kick off Gr8 Days
To: gr8days at lists <gr8days at lists.riseup.net>

Hey all,

So -- so far the only folks who are subscribed to this list are the ones who
attended the last couple meetings in DC ... y'all know who you are! If you
encounter other trustworthy activists who want to help organize, they're
welcome and encouraged to join this list too...

The rest of this email is about the July 9th teach-in / spokescouncil /
benefit concert at People's Media Center / Al-Fishawy Cafe, which is
definitely gonna happen to kick off the Gr8 Days of Resistance. But
organizing help is needed! In addition to what I wrote further below to
Amina (who will help with outreach) here's the most important info:

Ryme from People's Media Center says that our cost to use the space from 12
to 6 pm will be $400. Ideally we'll get co-sponsoring organizations to cover
some or all of this -- and can anyone volunteer to help nail down
co-sponsors?

My proposal is to have 3 workshops on climate justice; mountain justice; and
fusing anti-war / global justice. I think the latter could be an interesting
discussion that leads into joint strategy & tactics for direct action. Also
there would be three concurrent trainings for affinity groups & individuals
forming AGs ( i.e. legal, direct action tactics, medical)...

Also there's the spokescouncil which would need solid facilitation, and if
anyone has ideas about or would want to help put together the benefit
concert, that would be awesome...

Finally, there's definitely lots of other stuff regarding the G8 events that
we all should be discussing. If anyone wants to brainstorm quickly via phone
soon and can tell me your # that would be sweet... ;-)

solidarities from asheville! ~ ethan

Hi Amina,

Here's the basic info.

- Ethan Genauer. Education is an integral part of my activism; I recently
coordinated a conference in DC, and worked as an English writing tutor
throughout my undergraduate studies.
- A daylong teach-in connecting energy, climate and global justice issues
with international protests against the 2008 G8 Summit happening July 15-17
in St. Petersburg, Russia. Three issue-based workshops (on climate justice,
mountain justice, and anti war / global justice) from 12 to 6 pm plus three
concurrent trainings ( i.e. legal, medical, & direct action tactics /
strategy) for individuals and affinity groups. Followed by spokescouncil
meeting and benefit concert.
- Over 100 people of all ages (but lots of youth!)
- DVD film player & projection / possibly powerpoint capability. Food. Sound
system for benefit concert.
- This event will be publicized heavily to environmental & global justice /
anti war activists. We'll have co-sponsoring organizations, but DC Anti-War
Network and Mobilization for Global Justice will bottom-line the outreach.
