On March 7th Councilmember Jim Graham will introduce legislation authorizing
a local *Rent Supplement Program* to help low-income families get and stay
in housing that is affordable for them.  Each year, the District loses
thousands of units of affordable housing.  Shelters and other temporary
housing quarters are crowded because there is no affordable housing for
people to move in to.  Thousands of low-income DC residents spend almost all
of their pay on housing, leaving little money for other basic needs.

DC's Comprehensive Housing Strategy Task Force recommended a rent supplement
program to help stem the tide of loss, and Councilmember Graham will take
the first step toward implementing that recommendation on March 7th.

The Fair Budget Coalition and the Affordable Housing Alliance are planning
this event.  We encourage everyone who cares about affordable housing to be
at the press conference and then to help us pack the Council Chamber
afterwards to show the Council and the Executive that we are serious about
addressing this issue THIS YEAR!

Note:  DC's Living Wage Campaign will hold a press conference after the Rent
Supplement press conference, hopefully in the same room.  The Living Wage
law will go to final vote on March 7th.  We hope you'll stick around for
both.  Better pay and affordable housing work in tandem to improve the lives
of low-income DC residents!
