Subject: YOU'RE INVITED: Prince William County Critical Immigrant
Solidarity Meeting, Thurs., Aug. 9, 7pm
To: mgj at riseup.net
Dear Sisters & Brothers,
This is a reminder. Please forward this message as widely as possible
Mexicanos Sin Fronteras and Woodbridge Workers Committee urgently need your
support and solidarity. On July 10, 2007 the Prince William County Board of
Supervisors unanimously approved anti-immigrant legislation directing
county employees to require proof of citizenship before providing county
services (except those protected by state and federal laws). Additionally
information about a person's status may be sent and received by county
employees to other local, state, and national agencies including
Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It also calls for PWC police to
investigate a person's immigration status when detained by the police if
there is "probable cause" to believe that immigration laws were violated.
In addition it calls for an agreement between PWC police and Immigration
and Customs Enforcement that would train a group of PWC police to act as
immigration officials. We believe this resolution targets people of color,
allows for racial profiling and violates the human and civil rights of the
immigrant community. It has already created at atmosphere of fear and
division in the community.
On Thursday, August 9, 7:00 PM there will be a support and solidarity
organizing meeting at Bull Run Unitarian-Universalist Congregation located
at Church and Main Sts. in Old Town Manassas, VA. Please send a
representative to this important meeting.
Since the July 10th Supervisors' vote, we have organized three community
meetings to gather the community's ideas and recommendations for opposing
the resolution. The response was inspiring, with over 3,000 community
residents attending.
The community recommended and overwhelmingly approved the following
actions:
* Call on the PW Board of County Supervisors to immediately rescind this
resolution in its entirety.
* An economic boycott of all Prince William businesses (except those that
are immigrant owned) from August 27 - September 3, 2007.
* A massive nonviolent march and rally on Sunday, September 2, 2007.
* A one-day work stoppage on October 9, 2007.
The purpose and focus of the boycott and work stoppage is to demonstrate
the importance of the contributions made by the immigrant community to
Prince William County's economy. In addition, the rally and demonstration
will call attention to the civil and human rights violations made by this
resolution.
In addition to sending a representative to the meeting, you can express
your solidarity in any of the following ways:
* Send a delegation from your community to the march and rally on September
2;
* Send financial support to help defray the costs of this massive
mobilization;
* Send a statement from you or your organization expressing solidarity and
support;
* Make a commitment to inform your community about our struggle.
Sisters and brothers, our struggle is your struggle. This resolution will
impact all communities, especially people of color, and is already having
ramifications well beyond Prince William. The resolution was drafted by the
legal arm of FAIR, an extremist national anti-immigrant organization, and
clearly is intended as a model for communities nationwide. Several
jurisdictions in Virginia have introduced legislation patterned on Prince
William and we expect this to spread quickly throughout the nation. We are
an all volunteer community group and ask for your solidarity in our
frontline struggle. Material support can be sent to Mexicanos Sin Fronteras
at PO Box K, Woodbridge, VA 22194 (Because legislation is involved it is
not tax-deductible). Messages can be left at 703-822-3485, or by e- mail at
