Culture Change Book Presentation by Alexis Zeigler
Thursday, February 22nd
at 7 PM
at the Brian MacKenzie Infoshop
1426 9th street NW
Washington DC

Are we really running out of oil? How soon? What
impact will Peak Oil have on the political culture of
the U.S.? Alexis Zeigler, author of the new book,
Culture Change: Civil Liberty, Peak Oil, and the End
of Empire will conduct a presentation and discussion
of these issues.
Is biofuel a solution? Why has biodiesel taken off so
quickly? Biofuel will be examined in the context of
the history of industrial development, and how
biofuels fit in the global context of food
production,
species protection, and relationship between the
industrial north and less developed nations.
The exhaustibility of fossil fuel has been apparent
for decades. Why have we not responded? Why is our
culture so blind to ecological limits? Humans as
individuals are capable of intelligent planning, but
America blunders along as if there were no tomorrow.
Why is our culture so blind to its own future? Many
large societies seem to share the same lack of vision.
Why is this, and what can be done about it?
What if the solutions to our environmental crises were
apparent? Are the solutions difficult, or simply
outside of our current range of vision? It is of no
benefit to get lost in gloom and doom visions of the
future. We will look at the broader cultural roots of
the current crises, and look at real solutions the
current crises. A discussion of solutions is the
antidote to the overwhelming nature of the peak
oil
and ecological decline.
