As the holiday season approaches and the UN Climate Change Conference
takes place in Copenhagen, Transition Takoma and the Center for a New
American Dream will host a screening and discussion of the documentary
No Impact Man. The Takoma Park screening is one of dozens taking place
across the nation this week. No Impact Man, an Oscilloscope film,
tells the story of Colin Beavan’s decision to completely eliminate his
personal impact on the environment for a full year. It means eating
vegetarian, buying only local food, and turning off the refrigerator.
It also means no elevators, no television, no cars, buses, or
airplanes, no toxic cleaning products, no electricity, no material
consumption, and no garbage. No problem – at least for
Colin. But when his wife Michelle and their two-year-old daughter are
dragged into the fray, the No Impact Project has an unforeseen impact
of its own.
After the screening, there will be a discussion about how we can
reduce our consumption, spend less, put the fun back into the holiday
season and get more of what matters out of it. Event-goers will also
receive an e-toolkit full of tips for lowering their environmental
impact during the holidays.
The national screenings are facilitated by the Center for a New
American Dream and the No Impact Project. New Dream is an
organization that helps Americans consume responsibly to protect the
environment, enhance quality of life, and promote social justice. No
Impact Project was founded by Colin Beavan following his no impact
year. The Takoma screening is co-hosted by the Center for a New
American Dream and Transition Takoma, a local group that is working to
build a sustainable community as a visionary and practical response to
climate change, peak oil, and economic uncertainty.
This event is open to the public. Please go to http://bit.ly/3WDmB1 to
RSVP.
