First, I would like all of you for your support and wonderful notes during
our time in Guatemala with Adams Morgan teens in Mayan Indian Communities this
summer. So on behalf of Hoops Sagrado -- Gracias.

Second, I know this is not about the "Mintwood Fiasco" but it is an important
topic for Adams Morgan.

ANC Education Forum on Monday Evening - Please remember that the Adams Morgan
Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC 1C) is hosting a public forum Monday
(tonight!) evening, Sept. 15th, on "Education Issues in Adams Morgan and the
District." The forum will begin at 7:00 pm in the Community Room of the Third
District Police Station (1624 V St., NW).

Confirmed speakers include Board of Education President Peggy Cooper Cafritz,
Board of Education District 1 Representative Julie Mikuta, and the principals
of all three Adams Morgan public schools -- Dr. John Sparrow (Marie Reed),
Juanita Gray (Adams), and Erasmo Garza (H.D. Cooke). Representative of the Good
Shepherd and Heads-Up DC after-school programs will also be on hand to
discuss their activities. Superintendent Paul Vance may attend as well.

DC Schools are in free fall and need citizen action to fight for high
academic achievement of all students at all levels, and closing the achievement gaps
that separate low-income students and students of color from other youth. The
only solution offered by the mayor’s office is an Amen to Congress’s Voucher
plan. All children will learn at high levels when they are taught to high
levels --- instead of sending a select few to St. Alban’s on a voucher plan, what
we need is to raise the academic bar so that our public schools rival the best
private schools. I hope you can make this important forum.
