Please get the cars off the street. This is just unacceptable. Why can
this not be accomplished? It is not only outrgaeous that this activity
continues, but dangerous as emergency vehicles cannot pass.

Why is this still a "discussion"?....Haven't we made ourselves clear?

Adam,

I don't want to overload this discussion list, but since you sent your
message to the entire list, I wanted to let you know that I disgree with
you on Jim Graham. Of everyone involved with this project, his office
has been the most helpful. I think he's just as frustrated as we are.

Dear Jeff and Chase,

In case you didn't see it, the Washington City Paper did a brief story
on street and the fact that the cement that was poured will have to be
torn up to replace the lead pipes. It wouldn't hurt to call them again
suggest coming out with camera to photograph the cutting that started
today. I'm concerned that all the cutting they are going to do, rather
than replacing the whole side of the street, will weaken the foundation
of the street and created more problems in the future. Once again we
were not informed by DDOT in adavacne what the plan was (cutting or
replacing the side of the street) as they promised.

In terms of media this project would make a nice feature for the
Washington Post, InTowner (I have a friend there looking to do the
story). I have talked to Horace Holmes over at Channel 7 about the
street. He called me back and was very interested. I'm going to call
him again today and give him the heads up on the cutting.

Regarding Graham, my views are scewed because I'm a Statehood Green,
that disclosed, it is clear that his office hasn't been that helpful
despite our sincere efforts. They've come to meetings and listened to
us, but there has been little leadership in terms of effectively saving
the city money and making sure the project is planned all the way
through. His Chief of Staff came to the meeting at Eddie Beckers house
a full month before the concrete on the northside of the street was
poured. At the meeting we made a list of concerns, including making
sure WASA check for lead pipes before the concrete is poured. When
concerned citizens inform their council member of what is happening and
nothing positive happens, I think we have no choice but to hold our
council members responsible for the error - or does Graham's office not
have that much of say over things like this - either way it sucks.

Best,

Adam Eidinger

Hi all,

With Mintwood turned into a parking lot on Saturday night, I called 311
and

the Third District. 311 said they would try to send an officer out. The

officer who answered at the Third District said she couldn't dispatch
anyone

and suggested I call 911 if this was an emergency (which surprised me).

After explaining the situation, which the officer was unaware of despite
the

note sent by Ms. Good on Friday, she agreed to send out a car.

I was outside when the officer was giving tickets. He asked if I called

about the situation and I responded yes. He said that "Knowing people in

this neighborhood, we probably could get a tow truck down here if we

wanted." I asked him what he meant by that and he said that "People in
this

neighborhood get things that other folks in the city don't." I now wish
I

got his badge number. If that's the way the Third District feels about
its

residents, then no wonder crime is up in this neighborhood and we can't
seem

to get anyone to care about cars blocking our street.

Responding to Steve's suggestion, I'm going to contact folks at The Post
and

City Paper on Monday.

We are longtime readers of the list, first time posters. Steve
Chaggaris

raised two good points: accountability and media coverage. Would it
make

sense to invite metro reporters, elected officials, and/or government
staff

onto the Mintwood email list?

Perhaps some of the local media outlets would be interested in the
story.

In particular, the lead pipes and gas lines lend a health and public
safety

dimension that may resonate with a broad audience in DC.

Adam or others involved in the community, what are your thoughts on

Councilman Graham's next election? Are there other local officials or

would-be officials who may have an interest in making a name through

constituent service? Perhaps there are Mintwood residents who would
make

campaign contributions on this issue.

In the meantime, do people think it would be useful to contact federal

officials or committee staff? Sometimes appropriations and contract

management become campaign issues or even tv spots during an election
year.

Should the block reach out to anyone on the list below? What do people

think?

It's just before midnight on the same day that Ms. Good promised action

about the parking issue on Mintwood. Guess what: there are cars
illegally

parked up and down Mintwood... regardless of the "Emergency - No
Parking"

signs, despite the vows of stepped-up enforcement.

I'm tired of empty promises regarding this project. It's just one
debacle

after another, day after day, week after week, MONTH after MONTH.

Someone needs to be held accountable for this chaos. Is a class-action

lawsuit against the city a feasible option, I ask the legal minds on
this

list?

Do we have to get the Washington Post to do a story on this and publicly

embarrass everyone involved all the way up to the mayor?

Who gets held accountable? Do we take action by storming the mayor's

office?

THERE NEEDS TO BE ACCOUNTABILITY. I don't understand how NOBODY has
taken

the fall for this crap.

I can't imagine there's any other one block, one way street in the
country

that has experienced the absolute craziness that the 1800 block of
Mintwood

Place NW in DC has. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO OVERHAUL ONE BLOCK??????

Anywhere else but in DC, someone would be losing their job if this

ludicrousness took place.
