Happy spring, everybody!

As everyone knows, this spring is quite dry-- dry dust blows off the dog 
barren at Kalorama park.  As you may or may not know, the 9/11 memorial 
grove trees planted last fall are already moisture-stressed, and need 
supplemental water ASAP.  Try bending a twig of a mature established 
crepe mrytle in the park, then try a twig on a new tree, and you will 
see what's up.

Anyone with any connections to DPR/Casey trees/the other foundation that 
supports the groves should please expedite some action to get the trees 
watered.

In terms of available water sources in Kalorama Park, it comes down to 
the faucet on the side of the Rec Cen, and the flush faucet down by the 
entrance to the basketball court.  There is a flush faucet right by the 
entrance to the kids lot but it is part of the whole failed water system 
that DPR wasted $24,000 of the peoples money on.  That system is 
hopelessly flawed and has been turned off, so the kids lot faucet is dry 
as the trees.  DPR has "abandoned" that faucet anyway, meaning that even 
if they do put in another water system it won't include a readily 
accessible faucet.

I am watering the new street-side London plane tree on Columbia Ave. by 
the Community Garden, using a bucket and the little wagon from the 
garden, as the garden has committed to that tree.  But watering all the 
rest with a bucket is beyond me.  It's going to take larger efforts to 
keep those new trees alive.
