Dear Friends, We are extraordinarily lucky to have Bryan Weaver as
our ANC rep.
He holds two courts just about every Saturday in Kalorama Park, one
on the basketball court and the other between games talking to
neighbors.
On the Kalorama Park list, he offered to come out - late night - to
try to get the 3am basketball players to cease and desist.
Something he might not be able to do all the time and forever. If
anyone on Mintwood cares about the noise issue and Bryan's family
life - please join the Kalorama Park website and post your solution.

Thanks, Eddie

Cynthia is right, until about 6 months about we had the ability to
remove the rims from the backboards, it also gave us the ability to
change rims out when they were damaged at a minimal cost. It was also
better shooting on single rimmed basket.....
but the rims made too much noise for some neighbors, DPR did not like
that residents ( Earl, an ANC commissioner and a basketball player)
were taking the rims down, and the The Fund for Kalorama Park
included replacing the old style rims on their punch-list for
improvements for the court (it is the only suggestion from the list
that DPR honored) --- so after last year's basketball tournament DPR
came out and replaced them with double-rimmed backboard that is
impossible to take down with out a blow-torch. They make less noise
but we can not remove them nightly.
Earl and I did come out to the courts on few nights to talk to the
players. That seemed to work well for awhile. I am willing to do that
again.
What nights of the week are these guys playing Basketball? I will go
to the court, chances are that I know them I will ask them to respect
the 10pm rule (that was a summer rule designed for while school was
out), other than that we can only ask MPD for enforcement of the
posted law.

Johnson (1) told the kids not to play past 10 pm and (2) told the
neighbors to call him if they did. A few times he got out of bed at
2 in the morning to shut down games. This worked (for a while at
least) because Earl had influence with the kids and was willing to
take personal responsibility for the matter.
With Earl out of the picture, I don't know what the solution would
be. I am a bit dubious that the police could be mobilized to care
about it, or that their intervention would have the desired result if
they did. Any ideas how to get the basketball community to "self-
police" and respect a rule that is hard to enforce? I can't resist
pointing out that a lot of adults in the community are not setting a
good example in terms of respecting rules. The "it's not really a
rule unless I like it or I'm forced to obey it" attitude is
pernicious.

Subject: [AllforKaloramaPark] Re: People in park in early morning
hours ( 2am)
There is also the issue of people playing basketball at all
hours. We
regularly go out and ask people to stop playing which, as you can
imagine, has mixed results. The park has posted signs that state that
it is closed at dark but unless someone enforces it, the notification
is pointless....and it often seems as if the police would rather
people play basketball than do other things at 3:00 AM.
