Hi Neighbors:

Did you know that Kalorama Park has just been named a "National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom" site by the National Park Service, as a result of research arising from our twice-yearly walking tour, "Who Was Hortense Prout? From Slavery to Freedom in Adams Morgan"?

Join my neighbor Eddie Becker and I for the hour-long walk on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 20, at 10 a.m. and again at 1 p.m., starting at the Sun Trust Bank Plaza next to the Farmers Market at 18th Street and Columbia Road.

Learn about the 12 enslaved African Americans who lived and worked on John Little's sprawling cattle farm, which included most of today's Adams Morgan neighborhood. Meet the courageous young Hortense Prout, who became one of the last Washingtonians to make a dangerous bid for freedom at the start of the Civil War in the spring of 1861. Find out why her story is now nationally recognized and will be remembered.

Walkers will go first to Kalorama Park, the site of John Little's manor house, and on to Walter Pierce Park, where Howard University archeologists are researching the Quaker and Colored Union Benevolent Association cemeteries--the site of more than 7,000 burials during the 19th Century. Professor Mark Mack and his student team have been working in the park since the fall of 2006. This October, with first-time city funding, they will begin a ground-penetrating-radar survey of the historic cemeteries, to identify and protect any graves that remain.

This walk is part of Cultural Tourism DC's citywide weekend of free tours. Our walk is co-sponsored by the Kalorama Citizens Association. Please join us!
