[Mintwood-place] My Committee Work (Adams Mill Rd)

It's actually $200,000 for a piece of artwork to be placed at the 18th and Columbia intersection. The DC Commission on Arts and the Humanities recieved more than 100 portfolios and is working to narrow that down to five finalists who will then submit a rendering for what they propose there.

This has been discussed/posted on the the community listserves several times and at the ANC meetings. The call for artists also went out on the community listserves.

Matt,   unfortunately, the concrete area ended up being larger than shown on the final design plans DDOT distributed because DDOT made a last minute change (with no notice) after construction had started.(Groan.) There was a preliminary plan for a water feature there, but the ANC was able to get a large amount of funds (maybe $25K?) committed for a large sculpture to go there in addition to the Kiosk.  With the Kiosk and people standing there, the incoming large sculpture, and the high pedestrian foot traffic, including the fact that the bus stop is also being moved there,  it's not likely that any small green space could have survived in that area.  But once everything is complete and in place, and the intersection and lights finished, it could be evaluated to see what area remained that could be "daylighted" for a tree(s). Also, Mindy Moretti and Bryan Weaver have some clever ideas and are working on a green area at the other end of the
 newly reconfigured space.

Jim - If private property owners are being assessed for impervious surfaces because of the great stormwater management problem, I am confused as to why the District government itself made so much of the newly reconfigured corner of Columbia Rd & Adams Mill impervious (and ugly).   Is there no chance they could put some trees there?
