Dear Jim, I've always been impressed with your dedication to following up on these murders. But frustrated that you stop at the arrest, yet pursue no follow-up to determine judicial outcome. Many of the arrests for murder you cited in past postings, have not resulted in a conviction. The murderers are still walking the streets. Could you please follow-up with the Courts and provide a report on the judicial outcome of murder cases - including those not even brought to trail. If you can go back from the time you took office and follow-up on future cases, that would provide a better indicator of how well crime is being fought. Thanks. Eddie Becker

Subject: [Mintwood-place] Great Police Work Key Arrest Made
Dear Friends:
I want to congratulate MPD, the US Park Police, and all who participated in providing valuable information that led to the arrest of Alfonse Lurie Carlton (18 years old). Mr. Carlton is charged with the homicides of Derrell Goins (21 years old) and Paul Jones (14years old).
This arrest will hopefully bring an element of closure for the families of Mr. Goins and Mr. Jones. And to the larger community, the arrest signals to us the importance of law enforcement and community residents and community organizations working together to identify persons who are bring great harm and danger to all of us. When all of us work together, real progress can be made in making our neighborhoods safe and positive for all of us.
In closing, I mention the ages of these young men on purpose. While we are relieved to know an arrest has been made, sadly, nothing will bring back Mr. Goins and Mr. Jones to their families and friends. We will never know what contributions they could have made to our world. We have to do more, for all of our young people, to help them see ways out of the violence and danger so many of them must face on a daily basis.
Let me also refresh everyone’s memory on these two recent murders---
Shortly after 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2008, police were called to the 2200 block of Champlain Street, NW, to investigate the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located 21-year-old Derrell Goins, of the 600 block of Edgewood Street, NE, in the rear of that location suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Subsequently, he was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:56 p.m.
At approximately 9:15 p.m., on Friday, January 9, 2009, members of the department’s Third District and D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department responded to the rear of the 1300 block of Columbia Road, NW for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, they located 17-year-old Paul Jones, of the 600 block of Morton Street, NW, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the body and head. He was subsequently pronounced dead on the scene by a representative of the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office for the District of Columbia.
Again, my thanks to Chief Lanier and her officers for their fine continued work.
Bests Councilmember Jim Graham
