[Mintwood-place] Water Filter

Another plea.

If you haven't already, switch to natural toiletries -- toothpaste, perfumes, shampoos, hand soaps, detergents (for laundry and dishes), body lotions, etc. Much of what today's manufacturers add to their products hasn't even been tested safe beyond the usual torturing of defenseless creatures in laboratory settings for allergic reactions and such.

We're less likely to add to the problem of emerging pollutants in our waterways if we become more circumspect/careful about the everyday household items we use. Virtually everything that goes down the drain ends up in the waters you and I eventually end up consuming. Water treatment facility operators will rarely admit it publicly, but when it comes to dealing with these growing, often invisible, threats to drinking water safety, they're in way over their heads.

Less garbage in, less garbage out.

Kathleen

You probably already know this, but what you need is a filter that removes VOCs, or volatile organic compounds.

Aquafina's filters do that. They have whole-house filters, countertop filters, and under-sink models. And they have shower filters as well. Check their website. You can also turn up a bargain on eBay and, occasionally, Craig's List, with Aquafina filtration systems.

Certainly, there must be others, but I'm most familiar with them.

Unfortunately a lot of what are generally referred to as "emerging pollutants" cannot be removed; the science isn't developed enough. Frankly, a lot of the crap in the water supply can't even be reliably detected. Potable water sources these days are a soup of estrogens, estrogen mimickers (disinfectant hand soaps among them), pharmaceuticals, and other mutagenic compounds -- hey, scary, but what are you gonna do? The technology to detect and remove the garbage people are putting in the water lags behind our ability to pollute it.

This is the BP ("Buggering the Planet") Age.

People, a plea. If you're still flushing your unused/expired meds down the toilet, STOP!

Kathleen

Has anyone found a water filter that claims to remove lead and hormones?
The only solid claims I ever see on water filters is the removal of chlorine.
ith lead pipes in the streets and male Potomac fish growing vaginas, chlorine
s the least of my concerns.
