Dear Radio Project Uploaders and Downloaders,

You've probably noticed that your files are moving very much faster
than ever before. Isn't it great?! The question is: can we afford it?
Read on...

For the past 6 years, we've been scraping along on a residential DSL
line in order to keep costs low and therefore not have to be
continually asking for money. We've been searching for a way to get
more bandwidth at an affordable rate, and thanks to a deal one of our
collective members made to trade his labor, we've been able get a
discount on colocating our servers at a facility with lots of
bandwidth.

However, the bandwidth we've been enjoying for the past two weeks
is going to cost way more than we have been paying in the past.
How much bandwidth we buy will depend on how much all of us are
ready to contribute.

Basically, the bandwidth provider will give us a 2Mbps line, which is
double what we had in the past, for $250 dollars a month, just thirty
dollars more than we paid for the DSL. However, the speed you've been
experiencing lately has reflected use of **5Mbps,** with occasional
spikes all the way up to 8Mbps!!! The provider graciously allowed us
to float for a week or two, so we could decide what we needed. The
rate structure will be an extra $80 dollars a month for each
additional 1Mbps of bandwith above the base rate of 2Mbps/$250. So
basically, to keep the wondeful speed we've been enjoying, we'd need
to double the monthly overhead to $500. We're understandably hesitant
to commit to this without hearing from you, because we personally
don't want to be liable for paying out of pocket if nobody donates
enough each month to cover costs.

Additionally, we had to convert our server hardware to rack mount
units to colocate them in the facility, and we have just spent $800
to do this.

So, yes, this is a begging letter as well as a request for feedback
from you. If people show a willingness to commit to supporting
more bandwidth than 2Mbps, we'll take the plunge. But we need to
know that we're not biting off more than we can chew financially.

In an ideal world, this should be easy. If everone who used the
Radio Project each month gave only a couple of dollars a year,
we'd have it covered. Unfortunately, some people have given very
generously over and over again and some have never donated.

So its up to you. Let us know what you think at rp at radio4all.net
and, please, please, send money!
