LAST TOUR OF THE YEAR TO BE WALKED

The Associated Press called this tour of radical history and architecture
"the most unusual walking tour in New York City." THE VILLAGER said, "This
tour will keep you amused, walking, and looking up." It is now held on the
first SUNDAY of the month from April to October of each year.

The OCTOBER 2004 westwards tour will visit many "points of freedom and
destiny": the TRIANGLE FIRE; the only New York building by LOUIS SULLIVAN;
the bloomerite hangout of the 1850s; where WALT WHITMAN wrote poetry and
ate asparagus; the DRAFT RIOTS (with comments on the film "Gangs of New
York"); the New York MAY DAYS of 1970; Washington Square and Arch; the 1961
RIGHT TO SING protest there; early skyscrapers of Broadway; radical soirees
attended by EMMA GOLDMAN, MARGARET SANGER, and JOHN REED; the WEATHERMAN
HOUSE explosion; TROTSKY's farewell to America; the green architecture
movement; etc.

Bob Erler and Bob Palmer, the tour guides, will try to give you some idea
of the non-mainstream history of the city and to show how architecture
responds.  to events. We will sometimes describe historical moments at which
one of us was present or perhaps recount the account of a friend who was
there.

The tour will start at 2:30 p.m. on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 3RD, from the Peace
Building, 339 Lafayette St. (at Lafayette and Bleecker streets). Take the D
or F train to Broadway-Lafayette or the #6 to Bleecker. The tours go east
or west in alternate months. The next tour will be on April 3, 2005. These
tours, originating in 1975, are noncommercial; a voluntary contribution
according to one's means is requested.
