Briefing on Treatment of LGBT Detainees in our Nation's Immigration
System

With the National Immigrant Justice Center

Please join the National Immigrant Justice Center for a briefing on the
gross mistreatment of sexual minorities in immigration detention. LGBT
individuals have suffered incidents of sexual assault, lack of medical
care, arbitrary isolation in solitary confinement, and harassment and
abuse based on their sexual orientation in immigration detention.  

 

The National Immigrant Justice Center has filed 13 complaints with DHS's
Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties (CRCL) and the Office of
Inspector General regarding abuses that took place in DHS facilities in
eight states (including California), demonstrating the widespread nature
of the problem.

 

While these complaints specifically relate to LGBT individuals, they
illustrate the punitive conditions suffered by all immigrants in
detention, particularly vulnerable populations.  The briefing will
discuss the treatment of LGBT detainees and possible solutions such as
alternatives to detention and improved standards to protect detainees
from sexual assault and rape.
