CONFERENCE OVERVIEW

Defending the Earth in Times of War has been designed to place the
protection of natural areas in the context of our society’s current
orientation towards war—a war not only against people, but also against the
environment. A structural flaw in our nation’s cultural design has been
exposed by Bush’s war against “terror”: an unsustainable propensity for
exploitation of and domination over both people and nature. Meanwhile, the
daily headlines of war diminish the public’s perception of the urgency of
otherwise dire environmental crises.

To explore this theme, the Buckeye Forest Council is bringing to Ohio the
renowned Californian author, farmer, teacher and lecturer Derrick Jensen to
give a keynote address that explores our present path of environmental
conflict, and what changes we will have to make in the way we think and act
if we are to achieve sustainability within the broader biological community,
as well as justice in our human communities.

Jensen has written extensively on the environment, civilization, justice and
culture, having published Strangely Like War, Listening to the Land,
Railroads and Clearcuts, The Culture of Make Believe, and A Language Older
Than Words. Writing also for The New York Times Magazine and Audubon, Jensen
has won praise from Frances Moore Lappe, Howard Zinn and Winona LaDuke.

In addition to the keynote by Jensen, the conference will include workshops
on pertinent environmental themes, guided nature hikes, opportunities for
networking with environmental campaigners and researchers, and, of course,
food, lodging, music and campfires.
