wow, terrific info, ben.that musta took some hunting

This season I have sown over 20 varieties of kale, to trial - mostly varieties sourced during the Seed Ambassadors trip to Europe last winter. They are Madeley, Shetland, Uncle Bert's Purple, Westland Winter, Niki's Cut and Come Again, Asparagus, Westphalian, and Thousand Headed kales from the UK and Ireland; Altmarker Braun, Wesltander Winter, Butter Kohl, Roter Krauskohl, and Thousand Headed kales from Germany; Baltic Red, and Gron Kohl (Green kale) from Denmark; Blonde Butter kale of Jalhay from Belgium; Hoher Rote Krause, Heller Butterkohl, and Ostfriesische Palm kales from Switzerland; Cavolo Nero di Toscana from Italy; and then some of the usual crowd of suspects from this neck of the woods - largely variations on Russo-Siberian genetics, bred locally; and Pentland Brig, a UK accession we grew for the first time hereabouts last season and saved seed on this summer, in time to resow for this winter. I'm particularly excited by the red-leafed kales that came from
Europe. The only red-leafed kale currently available in the States appears to be the Bejo hybrid, Redbor - which is very robust and which lends a spectacular purple splash to a winter salad, but whose texture and taste doesn't stand up to the OP kales we tend to favor.

on the subject of russo-siberian kales, you might check out the monograph by andrew still, my seed ambassador cohort:

Well, just for that, I'll post links to some photos of tall tales... I
mean tall kales.
