F.O.C.U.S. Greater Syracuse has been selected as the only citizens’
organization in the United States to convene 100 citizens to meet for one day to
advise the federal government on Early Control Measures for Pandemic Influenza.
This is a great honor for our community. In the other three cities, the
citizens’ forums are sponsored by State or federal agencies. We offer an
opportunity for ordinary citizens to shape public health policy. The CDC (Center for
Disease Control) contacted F.O.C.U.S. to work with them on this public
engagement project. Let us know if you wish to participate. Be sure to download the
flyer. Make copies for your family, neighbors, work colleagues, and friends.
Call if you need more information or more flyers: 448-8732.
SDAT (Sustainable Design Assessment Team) VISITS SYRACUSE:
AIA experts from all over the country came to work with local community
participants to seek information that will lead to a collective direction in
urban planning and design. Syracuse was chosen by AIA as one of only eight
cities in the country to receive the expertise of a professional team. F.O.C.U.S.
is participating on the local Steering Committee.
CITIZENS’ ACADEMY:
During October class members ate the same dinner as the inmates in the
Public Safety Building as they learned about the law enforcement and judicial
system. They met with large and small figures at the Open Hand Theater where they
learned how important arts and culture are to the economic, social, and
educational climate of a community. The Ida Benderson Center for Senior Citizens
was the setting to learn about Human Services and Community Development. At
the State Office Building the class found out about the vast opportunities
available locally and regionally for public transportation and how plans for land
use and infrastructure occurs. They have completed seven sessions with three
more to go.
