WASHINGTON, D.C.-- November 2, 2006 -- The U.S. Partnership for Education
for Sustainable Development <http://www.uspartneership.org> will hold the
first meeting of its newly elected board of directors on November 9th and
10th, 2006 in Washington, D.C.
The meeting comes on the third anniversary of the Partnership¹s inception as
a grassroots, non-partisan U.S.-based response to the United Nations¹
³Decade of Education for Sustainable Development², first recommended to the
General Assembly by the United States and other nations authorizing the
Report of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg, South
Africa, in September of 2002. The worldwide Decade was subsequently launched
on March 1, 2005 at a ceremony at the UN¹s New York City headquarters. It
will conclude in 2014.
During the past three years, the U.S. Partnership has served to convene,
catalyze and promote activities that leverage the existence of the Decade
and increase America¹s awareness of sustainability challenges and solutions.
Over 300 organizations representing millions of Americans are involved
with the Partnership helping to advance its vision of sustainable
development fully integrated into education and learning in the United
States. Sustainable development is commonly defined as development that
meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future
generations to meet their own needs. For business, this translates into
measuring a triple bottom line of social equity, ecological integrity and
financial prosperity.
Partners and collaborators include the American Planning Association, the
National Council of Churches, the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, the
North American Association for Environmental Education, the U.S. Department
of Agriculture and World Resources Institute. Faith organizations, youth and
community groups, businesses, government agencies, K-12 and higher education
institutions use their participation in the Partnership to deepen the
effectiveness of their educational activities.
The board of the U.S. Partnership includes representatives from the Center
for Sustainable Enterprise (CSE) at the Kenan-Flagler School of Business at
the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency, the National Council for Science and the Environment and
University Leaders for a Sustainable Future.
The upcoming U.S. Partnership board meeting will be supported by recognized
sustainability exemplars. Herman Miller, Inc <http://www.hermanmiller.com/>
., a global leader in innovative design and sustainable manufacturing of
furniture for home, healthcare, education and business, will host the
meeting at its Gold (CI) LEED-certified National Design Center in
Washington, DC. Accommodation for traveling board members is being provided
by the Four Points by Sheraton Washington D.C. Downtown
<http://www.starwoodhotels.com/fourpoints/property/overview/index.html?prope
rtyID=1237> , a Green Seal Certified

by board members travel will be calculated and offset by NativeEnergy
<http://www.nativeenergy.com/> , a provider of renewable energy credits and
a member of the EPA¹s Green Power Network. The group¹s first-day retreat
will be facilitated by representatives from Group Jazz
<http://www.groupjazz.com/> , who also provided their services to help the
Partnership form in 2003. The U.S. Partnership is advised on a pro bono
basis by attorneys from Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP

firm which helped it file for incorporation earlier this year.
