Dear Dan and Colleagues--Here is what I submitted. How much did I miss? Tom
Mr. Spitzer--You need a 14th committee on Sustainability:
1) Creating a sustainable future for New York (how can future generations
live as we are able to live?)
2) Address Peak Oil--transition to alternative energy sources that are not
carbon based (PV/silicon, hydrogen, wind, hydro, etc.) How will NY cope
with gasoline at $10/gallon in 2020??
3) Zero waste--reduce waste, save energy, conserve resources
3) Transportation is big--develop alternatives to internal combustion engine.
Mass transportation vs car.
4) Reduce generation of CO2--as much as possible, as soon a possible
5) Leverage existing resources to support sustainability--research and R&D
at colleges and universities and tie-ins with R&D with NY industry to
generate "Green" business for New York. We must be a leader in
Green Business.
Create jobs--end flight of industry from New York
6) Incorporate Social Justice into sustainability effort. Living wage is
critical factor to end poverty in New York and generate a sustainable economy.
7) All sustainability initiatives must be implemented at the local
(county/city/town) level. State funding for establishment of local
committees all over New York.
All of the citizens of New York must be encouraged, at the local level, to
participate.
8) All sustainability efforts must be cross-generational to maximize inputs
into the process. Develop programs to give alienated youth hope for the
future--education, jobs, etc.
