At the end of last spring's sustainability study circle series hosted by
Sustainable Tompkins at Kendal, the group proposed several next steps including
a series of monthly lectures on sustainability for the staff and residents.
(FYI - Kendal is also developing an energy efficiency plan and has joined the
food composting program with T.C. Solid Waste.)

Sustainable Tompkins is glad to cosponsor these talks which will be open to
the public. The series will get underway on October 19 at 3:00 pm in the
Kendal auditorium with a talk by Jon Bosak on Peak Oil. Dr.Francis Di Salvo
will speak on 'The Looming Energy Problem- How Research Can Help' on January
30, 2007. (The November event will not be open to the public due to space
constraints.)

TITLE: Planning for Peak Oil

World production of oil will reach a peak some time in the next
couple of decades. After that point, falling oil production
combined with increasing demand will cause enormous and
never-ending increases in the cost of fuel. Extreme fuel prices
will result in the end of globalization and a return to local
production of goods and services. TCLocal is a local citizens'
group that's trying to plan for this future.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Jon Bosak, the chair of TCLocal, is a computer standards
specialist with many years of experience in organizing and
managing large-scale research and writing efforts.
