F.O.C.U.S. GREATER SYRACUSE
Forging Our Community’s United Strength
COMMUNITY REPORT, September 2006
Submitted by: Charlotte (Chuckie) Holstein, F.O.C.U.S. Executive Director
HOLD THE DATE

Oncenter Complex
FOCUS “WALKS THE TALK”- COLLABORATES WITH 4 PARTNERS:
Following the success of the April 2006 “Link CNY Innovation Expo”
F.O.C.U.S. welcomed the idea of partnering with 4 other organizations for the May
9th, 2007 event (not yet named). The Event partnership includes the SYRACUSE
CENTER OF EXCELLENCE, TDO, CASE CENTER @ SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY, MACNY
(Manufacturers Association of CNY) and F.O.C.U.S.. This is a challenging but great
model - 5 different types of organizations working together on a single event to
highlight sustainability. The partnership allows us to share people power,
intellectual resources, and collective wisdom. And, potential sponsors will
receive only one request for support – not five. F.O.C.U.S. is proud to be part
of this unique collaboration!
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CITIZENS’ ACADEMY:
The Citizens’ Academy was selected for an award by the University Continuing
Education Association mid-Atlantic Region Awards Committee. The Academy is
co-sponsored by University College of Syracuse University and F.O.C.U.S.
Interim Dean Bea Gonzalez will accept the award at the regional UCEA conference in
Annapolis, MD. Sandra Barrett, director of community programs for UC said, “
The project expanded Syracuse University’s mission to reach beyond the campus
and become involved in the pressing concerns of our community. By doing
that, we have created a more engaged and committed public.” Congratulations!
F.O.C.U.S. PLANS CITIZEN PARTICIPATION IN DETERMINING PROCEDURES FOR EARLY
CONTROL FOR PANDEMIC FLU:
F.O.C.U.S. has been selected as one of three organizations in the United
States to convene 100 citizens to meet for one day to advise the federal
government on Early Control Measures for Pandemic Influenza. This is an opportunity
for ordinary citizens to shape public health policy. The CDC (Center for
Disease Control) contacted F.O.C.U.S. to work with them on this public
engagement project. Everyone is welcome to participate. The tentative date is November
18. Let us know if you wish to participate. More information will be
forthcoming.
