Symposium for Sustainable Food and Seed Sovereignty

A Symposium for Sustainable Food and Seed Sovereignty is scheduled on
October 6 & 7 at the Intergenerational Center at Tesuque Pueblo in
Northern New Mexico. This Symposium features renowned regional
experts and internationally recognized activists in the area of
sustainable agriculture. Noted speakers include Iroquois Seneca
Elder, author, educator and farmer John Mohawk, who will discuss
Indigenous Agricultural Sovereignty, Winona LaDuke, Green Party Vice
Presidential running mate to Ralph Nader in the 2000 Presidential
Election Campaign and Founding Director of the White Earth Land
Recovery Project, who will address Global Agricultural Activism and
Ohki Simine Forest, of Canadian Mohawk descent and 20-year resident
and supporter of the Maya resistance movement in Chiapas, Mexico who
will speak on The Zapatista Model of Autonomy and Resistance, A
Global Awakening. Panels devoted to dry farming and water
management techniques, heirloom seed saving and cleaning methods,
traditional crops for nutrition and cultural health, medicinal herb
gathering, cultivation and use, alternative plant uses, and spiritual
agriculture, which is the essential starting and ending point of all
efforts in traditional land-based cultures, are included in the two-
day program.

The keynote speech will be given by Dr. Vandana Shiva, Author, Earth
Day International Award in 1993, and the International Award of
Ecology in 1997, F ounder, Research Foundation for Science,
Technology and Ecology. The speech will be based on a article written
titled "The Second Coming of Columbus". This speech draws a
parallel between the medieval papal bulls giving nations and the
peoples in them to the European Christian Monarchs and the
contemporary GATT Treaty that imposes "effective occupation" by
transnational corporations. For Details on this speech and for more
information call 455-5068.

In light of the strong spiritual connection between the land and the
peoples who work in harmony with its life-giving forces, this past
spring, The Eight Northern Pueblos of New Mexico, the All Indian
Tribal Council, and the Pueblos of Pojoaque and Tesuque came into
agreement and independently adopted resolutions excluding the
introduction of GMO/ GE seed on all tribal lands. A legislative
update panel is planned to include both tribal leaders and invited
state legislators in a discussion of current and future plans for
food policy and food security.

These programs are collaboratively organized and produced by the
Community Food Project of the Pueblo of Pojoaque, the Tesuque Pueblo
Agricultural Resources Department, the Institute of Natural and
Traditional Knowledge (INTK)/Native Earth Bioculture Council, the New
Mexico Herb Growers Association , Traditional and Native Farmers
Association (TNAFA), and with generous financial support of the
Lannan Foundation and other contributors, McCune, Kellogg Foundation,
USDA and the Institute of American Indian Art (IAIA).

For conference registration and information, contact Michiella
Sanchez at the Tesuque Pueblo Administrative Offices at 505-983-2667
or by e-mail at msanchez at pueblooftesuque.org

Conference attendees are invited to join a Seed Walk concluding at
the Pueblo of Pojoaque at the end of our program for a Seed Blessing
and Exchange to show our spiritual solidarity with the land and
dedication to supporting a sane and sustainable future for the Earth
and her peo
