Tradeshow Week’s Fastest 50
The Greenbuild Conference and Expo has been selected by Tradeshow Week, the premier news
magazine of the exhibition industry, as one of the 50 fastest growing trade shows in the U.S. and
Canada. As of the 2005 show, Greenbuild had more than doubled in size since its debut in 2002.

Nearly 10,000 people attended Greenbuild 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia, which featured an impressive
582 exhibitor booths. The inaugural conference in Austin, Texas in 2002 was attended by over
4,000 people and had 220 exhibitor booths.

“We are honored,” said Kimberly Lewis, Director of Conference & Events,
USGBC. “The growth of Greenbuild mirrors the advancement of the green building
industry itself and USGBC is at the forefront. We look forward to what the future will
bring.”

Rising energy costs, global climate change, and increased pollution have recently underscored
the need for a collaborative convention to share advancements and success stories, as well as to
disseminate the educational tools necessary for implementing green practices in the built
environment.

Greenbuild 2006 in Denver promises to surpass even the 2005 event. Highlights include:

* Over 80 educational programs

* More than 700 exhibitor booths

* Dozens of LEED workshops and green building tours

* USGBC member day and Chapter forum

* Thought-provoking keynote speakers

* Master Speakers Series

* USGBC Leadership Awards event
Greenbuild 2006 will provide an international forum for education, news and networking for all
professionals in the built industry.

Winners of the Fastest 50 must qualify as either a trade, association, or consumer show and must
also demonstrate at least 50% growth from 2003 to 2005 and at least 50% growth of total net
square footage from 2003 to 2005. Greenbuild 2005 will be formally recognized by Tradeshow Week
at an awards ceremony this November in Boston.

Master Speaker Highlights:
Eric Chivian, M.D. and Frances Cairncross

The impact of green building ripples far beyond the physical structures themselves. Each year at
Greenbuild, our Master Speakers series helps us deepen our understanding of the relationships
between environmental, human, and economic health. Greenbuild Denver is no exception; we'll
be joined by leading thinkers and visionaries from a broad range of disciplines as we explore
what it means to take green building to a "higher level."

In this month's newsletter, we highlight Dr. Eric Chivian from Harvard University, whose
work focuses on the environment's impact on human health; and Frances Cairncross of Oxford
University, who is renowned for her writing on the economy, the environment, and technology. To
learn more about all our Master Speakers, visit the Greenbuild Web site.

Eric Chivian, M.D.
Harvard Medical School

For more than 14 years, Dr. Eric Chivian has been working to involve physicians in the United
States and abroad in efforts to protect the environment, and to increase public understanding of
the potential human health consequences of global environmental change. In 1996, Dr. Chivian
founded and became director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard
Medical School, the first center at a medical school in the United States focused on this issue.
Today, the Center is a leading source of education and research for medical professionals, media,
the general public, and policy-makers worldwide.

Prior to founding the Center, Dr. Chivian designed and organized the 1992 MIT/Harvard School of
Public Health symposium Human Health and the Environment: the Medical Consequences of
Environmental Degradation, and was senior editor and author of MIT Press’ Critical
Condition: Human Health and the Environment. In 1980, he co-founded (with Professors Bernard
Lown, Herbert Abrams, and James Muller) International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear
War, recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize.

He is currently directing a project for the World Health Organization and the United Nations to
prepare the most comprehensive report yet available on the impacts of biodiversity on human
health. Sustaining Life: How Human Health Depends on Biodiversity will be published as a book in
2007 by Oxford University Press, and presented to the United Nations Convention on Biological
Diversity, the U.S. Congress, the European Union, and other policy-maker bodies.

     Frances Cairncross
Exeter College, Oxford University

Frances Cairncross, Rector (i.e., dean) of Exeter College, Oxford University, was one of the
first people to recognize the growing impact of the "green" economy on government and
business. While the environment editor at The Economist, Cairncross wrote Costing the Earth
(1992), in which she identifies opportunities for government to set policies that spur innovation
and encourage businesses to develop environmentally responsible products and practices. She
followed this seminal work in 1995 with Green, Inc, which continued her exploration and analysis
of the relationships between the environment, government, and economy.

Cairncross was also at the forefront of the technology revolution. In The Death of Distance
(1997) she predicted the transformative effect of technology on communications, and by extension
on business and the global economy. Her most recent book, The Company of the Future (2002),
posits that technology must become an integral, and integrated, part of every aspect of
business.

Cairncross has served as Rector of Exeter College since 2004. Prior to Exeter, she spent 20
years at The Economist, most recently as management editor. She won the first
Reuter’s-Alpe Action award for her coverage during the six years (1989-1994) she served
as the magazine's environment editor. In 2003, she won the Institute of Internal Auditors
Prize for Excellence in Management. She chairs the Economic and Social Research Council and is
President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (2005-06). She is a Fellow of
the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Senior Fellow at the School of Public Policy, UCLA.

Featured Sponsor: Shaw

Since its beginnings in 1946 as the Star Dye Company, a small business that dyed tufted scatter
rugs, Shaw has grown to be the world's largest carpet manufacturer, with annual sales of
more than $5 billion. CEO Robert (Bob) Shaw has a simple explanation for the company's
success: "Our business is about meeting customers, figuring out what they need, and
supplying that need. That's been our commitment from the beginning." Shaw's
commitment to the customer is matched by its commitment to environmental stewardship. A member of
the U.S. Green Building Council since 2000, Shaw is at the forefront of environmentally
responsible manufacturing and a leader in the green building movement.

Many manufacturers claim to make "green" products, but few take it as far as Shaw: the
company's stated goal is to make carpet materials and products that are fully "cradle
to cradle," i.e. that can be wholly reused or recycled at the end of their useful life
instead of being sent to landfills. Shaw's EcoWorx carpet backing system and its Eco
Solution Q nylon fiber were two of the first Cradle to Cradle certified products in the world,
and both products have been assessed through the MDBC design protocol, a third party evaluation
designed to maximize a product's environmental benefits. EcoWorx backing even comes with a
guarantee: Shaw will pick up any EcoWorx-backed product, free of charge, and recycle it into more
EcoWorx.
Because of their environmental benefits, Shaw products can play an important role in green
building; to help educate the market, Shaw has developed an online LEED calculator that
demonstrates how the use of Shaw products can contribute to earning LEED certification.

Of course, manufacturing sustainable products doesn't do the environment much good if the
manufacturing process itself isn't sustainable. As the first statement of Shaw's
environmental policy states, That's why Shaw implemented a comprehensive Environmental
Management System, and is working continuously to reduce waste, prevent pollution, and make use
of alternative energy sources at its plants and offices. For example, one recent initiative is
the development of a waste to steam facility at a carpet dying plant in Dalton, Georgia. This
facility diverts 21,000 tons of waste from landfill, reduces oil usage at the plant by 90
percent, improves plant emissions, and saves the company more than $1 million a year.

"Our end goal is true sustainability," explains Steve Bradfield, Vice President for
Environmental Development at Shaw. "Green building is integral to achieving that goal, which
is why we've been believers in USGBC and LEED from the beginning. Supporting Greenbuild is a
great way for us to demonstrate that belief, and even more importantly to help educate people
about the importance of green building."
