Lakeview housing project secures funding to move forward

A housing project for low-income mental health patients will break ground in a northside Ithaca neighborhood in just a few weeks.
Lakeview Mental Health Services, a Geneva-based nonprofit, has been working on the single-room occupancy housing project between Third and Fourth street for “the better part of four years,” said Mark Wickham, executive director of Lakeview.

“We've done a lot of work with the community on this,” Wickham said. “We're just excited to get started.”

The 30,000 square-foot housing project will create 38 studio apartments and “spacious common areas for use by the tenants,” according to a press release. The project was stalled last summer when federal funding fell through.

About a week ago, Lakeview received word that they had won a $7.5 million grant from the New York State Department of Housing and Community Renewal, allowing the project to move forward.

The total project will cost $9.4 million, and the gap is being financed by the State Office of Mental Health. The project will follow Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building standards.

Wickham expected the housing to be ready in about a year.
