Position Description for
New York Interfaith Power and Light Executive Director
Summary:
New York Interfaith Power and Light (NYIPL) is a New York non-profit
organization [501( c ) (3)] whose mission is:
In response to global warming our mission is to promote stewardship of the
earth by faith communities through energy conservation and efficiency and
through the use of renewable energy.
Established in 2003, NYIPL's 72 members (45 congregations and 28
individuals) have committed to take action on global warming. NYIPL facilitates that
action by providing leadership in energy conservation and renewable energy
programs, education and outreach, and public policy advocacy. NYIPL is one of 24
similar statewide that are part of the national Interfaith Power and Light
faith-based environmental justice movement addressing global warming.
NYIPL’s executive director is responsible for leading, growing, and
managing NYIPL, under the direction of its Board of Directors and as guided by NYIPL’
s Strategic Plan. As part of this effort, the executive director is expected
to increase NYIPL’s financial stability. Major responsibilities include plan
implementation, fundraising, board development, staff management and
development, public relations, assuring legal and fiduciary compliance and
increasing the membership in the organization.
Initial Responsibilities
1. Direct organizational programs, strategies, and activities so that
they are consistent with fulfilling organizational mission. Complete and
implement three-year strategic plan.
2. Develop and implement fund development strategies, including grant
proposals, major donors, and direct mail. Diversify NYIPL's funding base by
developing new funding sources. Serve as manager of all grants, including the
EPA ShopIPL Grant, The Regeneration Project Challenge Grant and the Troy
Annual Conference Peace with Justice Grant.
3. Work with the Treasurer and Finance Committee to prepare an annual
budget and manage income and expenses to assure fiscal accountability
throughout the year.
4. Cultivate ongoing relationships with key individuals in
corporations, governments, foundations and other sources currently supporting NYIPL.
5. Recruit, hire, supervise and evaluate the work of NYIPL staff
members. Maintain personnel records. (New employees will be subject to the
approval of the NYIPL Board of Directors.) Make reports and recommendations to the
Board of Directors concerning the work performance and continued employment of
staff members.
6. Facilitate the planning, promotion and execution of the annual NYIPL
conference.
7. Foster communication linkages with the Board of Directors,
membership, officials and New York judicatories.
8. Support all NYIPL committees on an as needed basis.
Ultimate Responsibilities:
1. Represent NYIPL to the public in ways that will encourage
congregations to join. This requires various forms of presentations, such as speeches,
sermons, slide shows, panel discussions, annual conferences, regional
workshops, etc.
2. Develop, diversify, and enlarge the Board of Directors, with
emphasis on clergy. Recruit additional religious leaders to the organization.
3. Conduct an ongoing public relations campaign to keep NYIPL in the
public view. Serve as NYIPL’s primary press spokesperson.
4. Oversee the recruitment of volunteers to support and participate in
NYIPL programs and activities.
Desired Qualifications
1. Minimum of five years experience working in the faith community,
either professionally or as a congregant. Experience as congregational or
denominational leader and/or experience working in the interfaith community is
strongly preferred.
2. Experience at the executive level of a non-profit organization or
similar entity.
3. Knowledge of and demonstrated concern for environmental issues,
particularly global warming and energy issues. An understanding of why
environmental issues are religious issues.
4. Grant writing and administrative skills, fiscal management
including budget development and fundraising experience.
5. Communication skills: must be a good public speaker and a strong
writer.
6. B.A. or B.S.; M. of Divinity or ordained clergy desired, but not
required.
7. Access to office space (can be at home).
Proposed Salary and Benefits:
$25,000, plus expenses. This is a salaried, executive position, not
considered to be hourly. It is expected that it will be approximately half time,
and is based on a $50,000 salary. The days and hours are completely
flexible, and will be dictated by the needs of the position. They will include
attendance at the annual IPL meeting, attendance at the annual NYIPL meeting,
monthly Sunday night conference calls (or other time as determined by the Board of
Directors), and attendance at NYSERDA or other agency conferences as
appropriate.
NYIPL is unable to offer benefits (health insurance, paid time off, etc.) at
this time. Salary and benefits will be contingent on funds available, and
there is no minimum length of contract implied in this position.
Location of Job: within New York State. It is expected that for the near
future, the Executive Director will maintain his/her own office space as our
funding does not allow for rental of space or equipment.
Termination of Employment: On 2 weeks written notice from the Board of
Directors or the Executive Director.
