Dear Friends, In November 2006, Tompkins County adopted a resolution entitled “In Support of a Sustainability Program for Tompkins County Government,” which recognizes the importance of pursuing sustainable practices at all levels of the organization. Through this resolution, a County Sustainability Team and several sub-committees were formed to develop an action plan that incorporates sustainability into ongoing County practices. In working towards accomplishing these goals, the Sustainability Team's Waste Reduction sub-committee developed a comprehensive policy on reducing and reusing waste, as well as composting and recycling materials before disposal in a landfill. It also takes into consideration a lifecycle approach when purchasing products. This policy is the culmination of over two decades of waste reduction initiatives in our community. Currently throughout the county, more than 55% of waste is diverted from the landfill, indicating that we have accomplished a great deal in the last 20 years. As we look ahead, our goal of 75% waste reduction by 2015 is achievable. By adopting this Waste Reduction policy, Tompkins County will promote practices in our community that benefit future generations and inspire a culture of sustainability in other municipalities, public and private entities, as well as among residents. On Tuesday, December 18 at 5:30, the Tompkins County Legislature will be voting on this Waste Reduction policy. It is important that members of the Board know that this policy is supported. If you support waste reduction within Tompkins County, please voice your opinion with board members by coming to the meeting on Tuesday or by contacting them in advance ( http://www.tompkins-co.org/legislature/members/ ). Your support in passing this policy is greatly appreciated and will make a big difference in our community. If you have any questions, please contact me at kmccarthy at tompkins-co.org. Many thanks,Kat McCarthy
