HEALTHY FOOD FOR ALL- Sustainable Tompkins Monthly Gathering

THIS Thursday February 8th GIAC - Fort Room 6:00- 8:00 PM

CHILD CARE PROVIDED Free Local Soul Food Meal

Sustainable Tompkins, along with GIAC, People's Garden Project, Just
Sustainability Initiative, Race Liberation Alliance, GreenStar Co-op,
and Cornell Cooperative Extension, invites you to a Food Justice
gathering on Thursday, February 8 from 6:00 to 8:00 at Greater Ithaca
Activities Center at 318 N. Albany Street (at Court St).
We'll begin with a free Soul Food dinner made by catering businesses
owned by people of color, and a community networking circle.
Speakers, including Pastor Ronald Benson (1st Baptized Church),
Jhakeem Haltom (Race Liberation Alliance, Thousands of One), and Liz
Karabinakis (Greenstar) will then present innovative programs, many
of them new, that increase access to affordable, healthy, fresh foods
in our downtown neighborhoods. These programs:
Enhance the nutritional value of snacks and meals served in
our public schools
Subsidize the cost of fresh produce from local farms with
convenient pick-up locations
Make free dinners available to young people at GIAC
Start gardens next to food pantry locations, like the first
Baptized Church
Teach gardening and "permaculture" skills, aimed for an urban setting
Connect the dots between race, class, and access to
healthy & green life choices

The presentations will be followed by a community discussion about
the projects and the issues raised
