While this conference is not exactly local, the issues are local and global
in scope.

Subject: [Geactivists] WSF-GE Trees
To: GEAN <Geactivists at geaction.org>
I have been invited as a speaker to a workshop organized by the Global
Forest Coalition, the Indigenous Information Network and the Pacific
Indigenous Peoples Environmental Coalition at the upcoming World Social
Forum in Nairobi, Kenya (20 - 25 January):
*Environmental Justice or Environmental Markets 2: Biofuels, a disaster in
the making * (21 Jan)
A workshop to raise awareness of the potential impacts of international
trade in biofuels, and to develop strategies to address these impacts.
There are about 10 international presenters on this issue and my role is to
speak on* the risks of using genetically modified trees for biofuel
production, and the role of industry in promoting these GM trees*.
Global Forest Coalition is also organizing an open workshop on biopiracy in
the morning of the 21st, and two strategy meetings I've been urged to
participate in:
- a strategy meeting on forest-related negotiations under the UN climate
regime on the 22nd
- a strategy meeting on UN Convention on Biological Diversity COP9 on the
23rd
I have accepted the invitation. Is anyone going to the WSF from GEAN? If
so, does anyone know of other workshops on GE?
Best,
Orin

Making global culture consistent with what the natural sciences teach us
just might enable global civilization to avoid collapse -- what the
theologian Thomas Berry calls "The Great Work." It is time to roll up
our sleeves and get on with it.
